Tech Companies are Racing to Fix a Chip Bug, But Threats Will Linger

Intel produces white paper, benchmark on Meltdown, Spectre

In response to the massive Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities exposed last week, Intel is reaffirming its commitment to security. Systems running McAfee, TrendMicro, and Webroot software are also expected to be eligible to receive the updates soon.

The flaws affect virtually all computing devices running on chips manufactured by Intel, AMD and ARM, although the worst - called Meltdown - largely just affects Intel.

"There is a lot of proof of concept code out there for them to learn from". Intel also claims that Skylake s-platform suffers from a higher performance impact and the data shows it to be of approximately 8 percent as compared to 6 percent of Windows. Windows systems will not be certified as compatible until the AV vendor sets a specific key in the Windows registry. In fact, the safety checks of said best practices actually increase the attack surface and may make applications more susceptible to Spectre.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) issued an update for Windows that would protect users from Meltdown exploits.

Finally, the Intel CEO highlighted "ongoing security assurance" as the third and final part of the pledge.

This clarifies a blog post the company released late Tuesday that seemed to suggest that Nvidia's GPUs were affected by the Spectre flaw.

Documents uncovered by the Wall Street Journal Intel says it has identified three issues in updates released in the past week for microcode, its software installed directly on the processor. Remember that the issue deals with how internal core chip data is managed in the kernel. These threats are merely new variations on an old theme. They're taking the most heat because of new disclosures of long-standing flaws in processor architectures that have widespread cybersecurity implications.

Almost everyone is at risk. LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft. More simply, the design flaws are rooted within the processor's architecture where a design defect allows applications to cross memory boundaries into the protected memory of other applications.
