News feed changes mean users are likely to spend less time on Facebook.
Today we use signals like how many people react to, comment on or share posts to determine how high they appear in News Feed. "We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health", Zuckerbergwrote. Last year, NY magazine reported on a study that found that "people who see an article from a trusted sharer, but one written by an unknown media source, have much more trust in the information than people who see the same article from a reputable media source shared by a person they do not trust".
Shares of Facebook slid more than 5 percent to $177.31 in premarket trading Friday after the change was unveiled. There will be fewer videos, which Facebook considers "passive".
Zuckerberg admitted that by making these changes, he anticipates that the time that people spend on Facebook will go down. Hordes of people acknowledge they are now addicted to Facebook and suffer from depression, anxiety and a host of other ailments because of it.
But Facebook's sweeping change on Thursday means none of that content will be able to break through.
The changes could shrink the social media giant's role as a major news source for many people.
These issues caused Facebook to discuss with lawmakers.
The move will not affect advertisements - users will continue to see the same ads they have before, "meaningful" or not. But forced to confront declines in digital advertising and online readership, many publishers have also staked at least some of their future on Facebook's ability to augment their audience.
"We think that we're now slightly overvaluing how much time people spend on our platform and undervaluing how many meaningful interactions they have with other people", said Mosseri. "But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable".
Facebook's new direction comes at a time when political discourse is often heated in the United States and nationalist groups are on the rise in other parts of the world. Let us know in the comments.
Google, Twitter and Facebook have come under fire for allowing the spread of bogus news.
News outlets have frequently used social media to drive traffic to their sites in recent years, but some Canadian organizations say Facebook is just one piece in an increasingly varied puzzle.
Facebook Social media has made it really easy to find local, national, and global news. Now Facebook wants you to think about making sure your post is extra meaningful, and what the meaning of meaningful might mean to you, but most importantly what it means to Mark Zuckerberg's algorithm.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the shift in the configuration of the News Feed on Thursday, saying it would reduce engagement by users at first but would lead to their improved "well-being". "If what we're here to do is help people build relationships, then we need to adjust".
But Facebook won't be going back to the old linear timeline or anything.
