Intel produces white paper, benchmark on Meltdown, Spectre

Intel Says Meltdown Spectre Patches Can Cause Reboot Problems in Old Chips

To help prevent stop errors that are caused by incompatible antivirus applications, Microsoft is only offering the Windows security updates that were released on January 3, 2018, to devices that are running antivirus software that is from partners who have confirmed that their software is compatible with the January 2018 Windows operating system security update.

Shenoy assured customers that Intel had yet to see any evidence that the Meltdown and Spectre exploits had been used to obtain personal data.

At AMD, security is our top priority and we are continually working to ensure the safety of our users as new risks arise. We expect to make updates available for our previous generation products over the coming weeks. In the document, Intel urges customers to delay additional deployment of these microcode updates and the company will provide frequent updates.

In the rush to issue patches there have been other instances of Spectre and Meltdown updates causing problems of their own. He uses the letter to set out a series of promises which he describes as "Intel's commitments to our customers".

There are three variants of the bugs in total, two for Spectre and one for Meltdown.

The Spectre and Meltdown flaws were originally discovered by Google engineers, and have sent computer makers scrambling to patch their hardware to protect against potential hacks.

Spectre, meanwhile, requires more direct access to the microchip, but affects central processing units from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices Inc and SoftBank Group Corp's ARM.

It's been a long week since we first learned about the now infamous Spectre and Meltdown chip vulnerabilities. Remember that the issue deals with how internal core chip data is managed in the kernel. So, out of an abundance of caution AMD will be making optional micro code updates available to further contain the threat.

Meltdown and Spectre are bad news with a capital B. While Intel has gotten most of the ink for its design mistakes, AMD chips, contrary to what you might have heard, aren't completely safe either. In each case, AMD will supply to OEMs who will then need to make sure they are passed on to the user. But Intel is likely to fare the worst.

In addition to other promises, Intel is committing to publically identify future vulnerabilities and "share hardware innovations that will accelerate industry-level progress in dealing with side-channel attacks".

So how do we fix these issues? The rest is to be finished by January end.
