Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen Sues Buzz Feed for Publishing Steele Dossier

An extensive review of Simpson's 312-page August 22 interview transcript shows that his strongest evidence for believing the dossier's accuracy is that he trusts Christopher Steele, the former British spy who compiled the 35-page document.

Simpson testified behind closed doors only after being subpoenaed to do so.

"Essentially, what he (Steele) told me was they had other intelligence about this matter from an internal Trump campaign source understanding was that they believed Chris' information might be credible", Simpson told investigators. "One of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization".

MCEVERS: An individual within the Trump campaign - do we know who that was?

But surely Grassley knows that Simpson spent years probing Clinton money scandals as a journalist and at Fusion, looking into whether they took official actions in exchange for contributions and whether the Clintons (and the Obama administration) abused EB-5 visas, which essentially allow wealthy foreigners (and potential contributors) to buy US citizenship.

"He said he was professionally obligated to do it", Simpson said. "I said okay. You know, I agreed, it's potentially a crime in progress". Grassley and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, called last week for the Justice Department to launch a criminal inquiry into Steele.

More news in the Russian Federation investigation - the author of the infamous Russian Federation dossier on Donald Trump thought Trump was being blackmailed. "I remember some of them and some of the names", Simpson said, but his lawyer would not allow him to provide the information. FBI Director James Comey concluded the initial Clinton email investigation in July 2016, four months before the 2016 election.

The infamous Russian Federation dossier was not the sole basis for the FBI's investigation into Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation, according to a newly public document that notched a tactical win for Democrats inside Washington, D.C.

Several news organisations, including the BBC, were briefed on the dossier before the November 2016 election. The document itself began as opposition research funded by Republicans.

Also, according to Simpson, Steele was so horrified by what he was finding that he contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation instead of just reporting back to his Clintonian masters.

The 35-page report drew on information from Russian contacts and concluded that Russia had been "cultivating, supporting and assisting" Trump for at least five years and fed his campaign "valuable intelligence" about Clinton.

Trump has derided the dossier as a politically motivated hit job. "The memos are field reports that Chris's network conducted and there's nothing phony about it".

LUCAS: We don't. Simpson doesn't say.

At the time RPC, the United Kingdom law firm representing Mr Steele, declined to comment. But he testified that the two cases were entirely separate, and did not influence one another. It's also possible Simpson misspoke, confusing a whistleblower with an Australian diplomat who heard a Trump adviser, George Papadopoulos, say he knew Russian Federation had dirt on Hillary Clinton.

"He said don't worry about that", Simpson said. Ultimately, the dossier claimed
