Malia Obama & David Letterman

On the first episode of David Letterman's new Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Letterman sits down with former president Barack Obama for a wide-ranging chat about his new foundation, his kids, and how they both enjoyed some vacation time after their old jobs.

"If you only watch Fox News", he says, "you're living in a different universe".

Netflix usually presents its new shows one season at a time, with a dozen or so episodes available immediately, but its latest talk show is being unveiled at the unusual rate of one installment per month.

Obama avoided mentioning Trump, who blasts both the media and the Russian Federation investigation regularly, and instead opted to go more broad with his answer. Lewis believes if there's no march, if there's no movement, there's no Obama presidency.

Obama, who has delivered similarly soaring exhortations in the past, stays away from the pulpit with Letterman, maintaining a sense of calm perspective. It should have taken him five minutes but took more like 30 minutes.

Obama said that his success in 2008 was made possible in part because of how his campaign used social media as an organizing and messaging tool just as the technology was emerging. After Obama explained the challenges America faces, he said: "To hear you describe this in a way I can understand just makes me so happy you're still president". We see Letterman walking the Edmund Pettus bridge in Alabama with Congressman John Lewis and reflecting on the Bloody Monday conflict which it was the site of.

The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman said the interview was "not groundbreaking" and added that it was a "big disappointment" not to get juicy Obama remarks about Trump. Get the popcorn! Except, uh, maybe not all of it, as Obama doesn't talk about Donald Trump at any point.

The guest list for the initial six-pack of My Next Guest instalments sets the stage for a fascinating and diverse array of conversations (one assumes it will continue as long as Letterman remains inspired).

Former President Barack Obama opened up about taking his daughter Malia to college past year, telling host David Letterman he was "basically useless" during the entire move-in process.

Obama and the entire audience laughed at the story.

"I said this man doesn't know anything about me", Lewis told Letterman. Yet after that first back-and-forth, Letterman makes it clear that he'll be the one asking questions, and the discussion proceeds from there. Letterman admits he thought Twitter would be a "mechanism" for truth-telling, but Obama swoops in: Are you really getting the truth if "you're getting all your information off algorithms being sent to your phone?" Other scheduled guests on Letterman's show include George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Tina Fey and Howard Stern.

It's not a great interview, but it's a cozy one.

Letterman gives a attractive answer, verging on tears: "Mr. President, this is what I'm struggling with at this point in my life: I have been nothing but lucky".
