America’s toughest sheriff’ aims for Ariz. Senate seat Chris Cassidy Wednesday
Arpaio said on Twitter he would be "unwavering" in his support of the agenda of Donald Trump, who issued a controversial pardon on his behalf a year ago.
Arpaio was spared a possible jail sentence previous year when Trump pardoned his conviction for disobeying a judge's order in an immigration case. Then Trump offered the pardon last summer.
In announcing his candidacy, Arpaio joins at least one Republican rival. "I'm a big supporter of President Trump", Arpaio toldthe Washington Examiner. Jeff Flake's seat in order to help support President Donald Trump's agenda, and he doesn't care if Flake likes it or not.
His conviction of contempt of court was delivered by a judge who said he went too far trying to protect Americans from illegal aliens.
Arpaio's Senate bid in the year of his 86th birthday is making Democrats even more bullish on a race in which Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., has already consolidated most Democratic support.
His tweet followed local news reports that McSally, who represents Southern Arizona's Congressional District 2, will launch her campaign later this week. After 24 years as Maricopa County's chief law enforcement officer, Arpaio was handily defeated by Democrat Paul Penzone.
Arpaio said in December that he was 'seriously, seriously, seriously considering running'. He was soon pardoned by Trump, for whom he had actively campaigned during the 2016 election.
"I can't comment on the specifics of any election, voicing support for a candidate in a race like that".
"I think he brings a great knowledge from his own experience on immigration issues", said Hodgson.
"As a sheriff, I've done some controversial investigations", said Arpaio, who worked as a DEA agent during the time he coined the idea of a border wall to stop "the drugs that destroy our country".
The former sheriff was also asked if this run is more about his ego - that he's missed being in the spotlight.
"I'd have a lot of fun".
Arpaio endorsed Trump in his presidential run and appeared alongside him at 2016 presidential campaign appearances, including a large outdoor event in the lawman's hometown of Fountain Hills outside of Phoenix as well as Prescott Valley.

Arpaio's announcement also raised questions about whether he was serious about the Senate or if he was mainly seeking publicity.
Former state senator Kelli Ward, who has been the front runner in recent polls, drops to 25% in this latest survey.
"I'm going to have to work hard; you don't take anything for granted", Arpaio told Washington Examiner reporter David N. Drucker for the story that broke the news.
During his tenure, he became widely known for imprisoning inmates in tents in stifling heat and forcing them to wear pink underwear.
