The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump "is comfortable participating in an interview and believes it would put to rest questions about whether his campaign coordinated with Russian Federation in the 2016 election". But that seems unlikely, some experts say.

Preliminary discussions are under way for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to potentially interview US President Donald Trump as part of the probe of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, NBC News reported on Monday (Jan 8).

"It just doesn't count, as long as it's not a corrupt bargain", Starr said, explaining that if Trump was just acting in order to defend himself, that doesn't reach the level of corruption of, for example, "being bribed or otherwise being compromised".

It's certainly possible they are afraid Trump will commit perjury many times over if he sits for hours and is subjected to intense questioning.

That source told The Washington Post that Trump was open to being interviewed, despite his lawyers' apparent concerns, and thought sitting down with Mueller might settle concerns about potential collusion.

Reporting based on leaks of USA surveillance revealed in February that Flynn had misled Vice President Pence about the contents of the phone call, saying that sanctions were not mentioned - an account Pence then repeated to the American people.

In lieu of an in-person interview, the Trump lawyers have discussed the possibility of Trump providing a sworn affidavit attesting that he was not involved in collusion during the campaign.

The Los Angeles Times broke the news this morning, with a report that Ivanka exchanged pleasantries with the Russian duo. Trump also did not want Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself because he hoped Sessions could block the probe. Trump Jr. has maintained that the meeting was to discuss global adoption policy.

It is unusual for a sitting president to speak directly to a special counsel or independent prosecutor who is leading an investigation. Now Trump's National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has pled guilty and is cooperating with the investigation.

"If you try to corruptly persuade a witness to testify falsely, that is a separate offense", he told Business Insider in September. Mueller will decide if anyone will be charged with obstruction of justice. That information can be in the form of statements by others they interviewed or press accounts. "That focus seems to be on the President and his son".

At this stage, we simply don't know whether Trump's finances are legally problematic or politically embarrassing (e.g. he did deals with Russian Federation when he had said he hadn't).
