Russian Foreign Ministry: possible JCPOA failure may affect nuclear disarmament

US to decide on Iran sanctions waivers on Friday

US President Donald Trump speaks about the Iran deal from the Diplomatic Reception room of the White House in Washington, DC, on October 13, 2017. Still, he has so far stopped short of withdrawing the United States from the accord. Doing so again would have the same effect; it would be up to Congress to reimpose sanctions. Last month saw lawmakers miss what had widely been seen as a deadline set by the White House for such legislation to be delivered.

Such a balance may satisfy Trump's demand to raise pressure on Iran, while not embarking on a frontal assault on the most central trade-offs of the 2015 accord, which the president has blasted as the "worst deal ever".

U.S. officials expect Trump to grudgingly sign the sanction waivers once again before they start to expire this weekend - though he is also likely to impose new sanctions on Tehran over non-nuclear issues. And is there a connection between the deal and the protests?

The two senators met with McMaster about the draft language on Thursday and aides say they continue to make progress.

But the European diplomats appear to have allies in Trump's own camp.

Mr Johnson also used the discussions to raise the case of the imprisoned British mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a 39-year-old British dual national who was arrested and imprisoned in 2016 while on holiday in Iran to show her baby daughter Gabriella to her parents. "Its foreign adventurism and domestic repression must be confronted using all instruments of American power". He said that Berlin wanted to work with its European Union partners to uphold and implement the deal, saying the motivation for Europe to do so was "overwhelming". Thus, rather than "fixing" the deal, unilateral Congressional revisions would end up violating and killing it.

But with the latest USA certification deadline looming in mid-month, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi on January 8 said "the global community must be prepared for the US possibly pulling out" of the agreement. Iran has also given the IAEA regular access to its nuclear facilities to observe compliance.

United Nations officials have repeatedly found that Iran is sticking to the agreement. The comments came as the nuclear deal deadline looms.

"That's what caused the people to take to the streets", he said.

They are expected to advise that the US remain part of the nuclear agreement. Some, like Secretary of State John Kerry, hoped it would moderate the regime.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program was exclusively peaceful in nature.

"With relief on sanctions from U.S. and EU, Iran is biding its time, reaping the benefits from the deal and accruing assets until it is free to resume its prolific activities". But the real villain is the regime's incompetence and corruption.

It emerged on Thursday that senior Iranian leaders have lain the blame for recent demonstrations on the failure to secure full sanctions relief since 2015.
