Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities shake industry — Risk & Repeat

Upcoming CPU patches could cause performance issues

The Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, which were disclosed last week, are vulnerabilities in CPU architectures that could enable attackers to steal data from systems' memory without leaving much, if any, trace of the attack.

"In early December we began distributing Intel firmware updates to our OEM partners", the company states in its latest security update. As a result, microcode updates and further OS patches will be on the way to mitigate the issue. Even still, the company is facing at least three class-action lawsuits.

Two United States senators, Democrat Jack Reed and Republican John Kennedy, have written to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), asking the financial watchdog to investigate Krzanich.

The new update being rolled out for iOS and macOS delivers the patch that defends these operating system against Spectre security flaw. We also have a list of Intel CPUs affected by Meltdown and Spectre. These bugs could allow hackers to access sensitive information like passwords and other private information from devices.

But now Microsoft confirmed there would be a performance impact, some of which would be noticable by the user.

Whether or not this flows down to end users, is in the hands of PC manufacturers, with the majority having their own update systems. The problem was made public on January 3 by the tech website The Register, causing tech firms, particularly Intel, to scramble to disclose more information. This involves 2016 PCs with Kabylake, Skylake or newer CPUs. 'Specifically, these systems are running Intel Broadwell and Haswell CPUs for both client and data centre.

And the news gets worse the older the machine. A number of large technology companies have or are already working on installing updates and securing patches to fix the Meltdown problem.

And the servers are likely to feel the impact the worse.

Microsoft has temporarily stopped fixing a serious security flaw on personal computers powered by certain chips from Advanced Micro Devices because the repair is crippling the affected machines.

The security patches for Meltdown and a variant of Spectre were issued in September, reports Reuters.
