Former Raiders Executive Thinks Jon Gruden Will Be A "Revelation"

12 Enero 2018, 11:56 | Gerardo Tarin

Fans excited about Gruden leading the Raiders

Raiders' Jon Gruden reportedly wants Teryl Austin as his assistant head coach

Gruden was introduced as the Oakland Raiders' head coach on Tuesday.

Gruden confirmed Rams quarterbacks coach Greg Olson will pilot his offensive coordinator, and Bengals ex-D coordinator Paul Guenther will steer the Raiders defense. His last memory of coaching in Oakland was the Tuck Rule game, and it's one that was clearly on his mind during his introductory press conference. He previously coached the Raiders from 1998-2001 before being traded to the Buccaneers in 2002.

Former Raiders great Rich Gannon is rumored to be the new quarterbacks coach, however, it is not official as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gruden began his head-coaching career in Oakland 20 years ago Monday, leading the Raiders for four seasons before spending seven as the Buccaneers' head coach. That was alcohol on the wound and the Raiders wouldn't recover until the 2016 season.

Gruden appears to have a clearer answer at quarterback, despite Derek Carr's struggles in his fourth National Football League season, but he's coming off a hiatus more than twice as long as Ditka's. There was no leadership.

With Gruden out of the booth and setting up shop in the Bay Area, who will ESPN hire to replace him? Gruden was officially announced as the 21st head coach in the history of the Raiders, 17 years after his reign as No. 12 came to an abrupt end. He's been around the game, studying, analyzing and understanding how teams operate on both sides of the ball. He's still a brilliant mind with lots of knowledge. "You hear him on Monday Night, you see how excited he is for football". The Raiders went the other way, and are hiring the original McVay in Jon Gruden. This time around we are getting a wiser Gruden. I've felt, as I said, for six years that Jon Gruden is the person I want to lead this team.

"And I just want to say that there is really four major reasons that I am here coaching today".

Of all the mistakes that Al Davis committed, trading Jon Gruden was the worst of them. If they have to give some of that back as part of the effort to get him back sixteen years later, Davis will be the last one to complain. It doesn't affect the cap and it's not our money. But what you have to do is put the work in and be prepared and have a passion for the game.

"Either way, hate the fact that we'll have to go against him next year".

If you're going to pay someone $100 million over 10 years, they get a hype video. One fan held a "Welcome Home Chucky" sign with Gruden's signature.

Here's another potential problem: Derek Carr.

"I think he's got a huge upside", Gruden said. It'll be interesting to see who else he attracts. With Raiders legends such as Charles Woodson, Jerry Rice, Jim Plunkett and Howie Long among the former players in attendance, the fanfare for Gruden's arrival seemed long-anticipated.
