De Bruyne stretchered off after wild Puncheon challenge

Two of City's leading stars - Brazilian Gabriel Jesus and Belgian Kevin de Bruyne - picked up injuries in the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend. "But players could be out for a long time and they don't deserve that".

Manchester City's winning streak in the Premier League came to end on New Year's Eve as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace, who had a stoppage-time penalty saved.

Watford were already doomed to their seventh defeat in nine games but at least had the final say when Andre Carillo crossed from the right and Gray turned in. But the league is the league. It also would have set a Premier League record of 12 straight away wins.

Guardiola asserted that it is something that needs to change, as he referenced fouls on De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan in the recent matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, respectively.

It came as no surprise when City did make it 3-0, De Bruyne again causing trouble with a wicked ball from the right. We're in a good position. Then we must react to that and keep focused for the rest of the season. Benteke's shot was struck against Mangala, however.

First of all, Guardiola's squad is beginning to suffer from injuries and the absences of key players.

"Obviously I am really happy to save the penalty and generate a counter-attack".

Kyle Walker rarely let Palace's in-form Wilfried Zaha get the better of him, and made more interceptions (three), gained more possessions (13) and sprinted faster (34.69 km/h) than any other City player. In fact, depending on whether the Blues progress in the FA Cup, it's likely the travelling will be less than 500 miles in January - a huge difference and a chance to rest aching limbs and tired minds.

"He's a player from Arsenal and I think he's going to stay there", Guardiola said of Sanchez.

Aguero, who replaced Jesus, went closest in the first half as he rattled the woodwork in the 28th minute.

"I admire the physicality of the Premier League, but the referees have to protect the players", Guardiola said. "At this level, when you have clear chances to score, seconds before they equalised too, it gives belief to the opponents [if you miss]". The Premier League did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Puncheon was cautioned for this disgraceful 'challenge', which diverted attention from a smart tactical display by Palace and fierce, intelligent defending. Hopefully a two-game ban will encourage Zaha to clean up his act.

"Please, referees, they have to protect players", he said. Isolated moments, but they told the story of the half.

City aren't the only club complaining.

Guardiola defended his side's rare slip-up, insisting dropping points was always going to happen.
