Warm start to winter
Get ready for a big change in your weather for the upcoming Christmas holiday weekend. Here's what you need to know.
It's a cold setup through next week with additional light snow chances. Conditions will be cloudy, with a high near 52 and west winds from 5 to 7 miles per hour, becoming north in the afternoon. Rain chance at 100%. Temperatures cool into the lower 50s. A few flakes will mix in with the rain during the afternoon. New snow accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible.
Travelers heading north to Dallas should bundle up because temperatures are expected stay mainly in the 40s.
Eventually the air will warm enough for precipitation to fall as just rain Friday night into Saturday.
Christmas Eve on Sunday will then be quiet, and fine for travel.
It will be a cloudy start to the day on Friday.
Christmas does have a good chance of snow whether it comes from a coastal system off the East Coast or more of a lake affect process.
Accumulating snow is forecast in Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; St. Louis; Chicago; Indianapolis; Detroit; Cleveland and Toronto as it rolls out Saturday night and Christmas Eve. Snow will continue through the day and be heavy at times before winding down during the early night.
That said, we could see a coating to an inch or two of snow even in Boston. In the evening, skies will be partly cloudy, with a low around 19. That cold air, with highs only in the teens and 20s, will last pretty much until the New Year. The cold will remain through the rest of the week.
The storm will move through later Friday to the north and east, so beware on Friday afternoon and evening if you're heading toward New England.
