[WATCH] California wildfire: mass evacuation in Ventura country
The Rye fire near the intersection of Copper Hill Drive and McBean Parkway was reported at 9:33 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Joey Marrone. Dubbed the Rye Fire, the fast-moving blaze was reported near Rye Canyon Loop Road at around 10:30 a.m. local time. The freeway reopened by 2 p.m., the city tweeted. Eastbound lanes of Newhall Ranch Road remained closed. In October, more than a dozen fires blazed through the northern part of the state, burning thousands of acres along the way. The California Highway Patrol said the closures would last an unknown duration. LA County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby told the New York Times that "we are in an extreme firefight right now, trying to protect lives and save property". Hardly any measurable rain has fallen in the region in the past six months. All of Rye Canyon Loop was closed to traffic.
Fierce Santa Ana winds are whipping up the inferno, pushing it towards Santa Paula, a city of some 30,000 people, prompting evacuation orders that were later expanded to houses in Ventura, which has 106,000 residents. (Unconfirmed reports of a death on Monday were erroneous, he said.) Only one injury had been reported, and one hospital, Vista Del Mar, a behavioral health facility, had been evacuated. The state created a strategic fire plan in 2010 to try and identify the most hazardous areas and limit destruction.
An image captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite shows large plumes of smoke streaming into the Pacific, illustrating the fires' scope and size.
Almost 200,000 people lost power in Ventura County on Tuesday, making it challenging for the 1,100 firefighters to put out the flames.
