Hugo Lloris certainly deserves credit for his second-half stop from Benzema's header, but it is hard to shake the feeling that a Robert Lewandowski or Sergio Aguero would have converted such an opportunity.

The result leaves both teams in a good position in the group with seven points from their first three games and they will both go at it again in two weeks time at Wembley.

The French national goalkeeper was in imperious form, with one save in particular catching the eye - from a bullet header at close range from his compatriot Karim Benzema.

Isco and Marcelo were each denied by good near-post saves from Lloris as Madrid pushed for a leveller before the break and they managed just that with two minutes of the half to play, Ronaldo blasting home from the penalty spot after Aurier had brought down Toni Kroos at the end of a flowing move.

Are Tottenham a genuine contender in the Champions League? all will be revealed on Tuesday night when the London side take on the defending Champions Real Madrid in the Bernabeau.

Despite the draw, Madrid stay top of the group on seven points same point as Tottenham but ahead on superior goals advantage. Kane had five goals and Ronaldo equaled him with his goal on Tuesday.

Both sides have won their first Group H fixtures, while their top strikers are currently leading the goalscoring charts in the competition - Kane has scored five times already, while Ronaldo sits on four strikes.

It has not just been home discomforts that have hurt Real this season.

City is on a maximum of nine points and should only need to win one of its last three games to qualify for the knockout stage.

Early goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus in the ninth and 13th minutes respectively put City 2-0 up. At the back Tottenham are strong as well a solid goalkeeper in Lloris protected by the Premier League's best defence from last season. Marco Asensio, 21, has the ability to win a Ballon d'Or one day but Eriksen gets the nod thanks to his consistent brilliance over the last few years.

Zinedine Zidane felt Real Madrid paid the price for not scoring first at the Santiago Bernabeu as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against Tottenham. And then at 1-1 with 20 minutes left to play Fernando Llorente sent Harry Kane clean through on goal.

MF Son Heung-min, NR - Finally entered the fray for the final moments in place of the injured Sissoko.

DF Serge Aurier, 7 - Forced the own goal from Varane with a fine low cross, but then undid that good work by conceding the penalty that gifted Real their equaliser.

Then soon after Harry Winks over-ran the ball in midfield, Casemiro fed Ronaldo and, as the forward unleashed a stinging shot, Lloris instinctively jumped to push it over the bar. It was unreal, a miracle, and it preserved the draw.
