Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Tips and Tricks Guide: Get the most from your Google phone
It's now slimmer and with less chunky chamfered edges, adding up to an altogether tidier appearance.
Previously, whether you were on a Nexus or the first-gen Pixel, when you took a photo and tapped it from the Cameraapp, you'd be taken to a slightly barren interface like the one below: back button and All photos on top, sharing and editing and deleting and info on the bottom.
Now Google is looking to build upon its Pixel prowess with the Pixel 2.
There's also one big problem with the Pixel 2 that has nothing to do with the phone itself: It's relatively hard to get.
That means a pixel density of around 441 PPI.
One the primary benefits to owning a Google-branded phone is that new versions of Android are made available immediately, as opposed to waiting for a third-party manufacturer to customize and qualify the code. Instead of moving completely, the content simply shifts by "at most" a pixel whenever the minute changes.
Google today officially unveiled its custom Pixel Visual Core co-processor. If you can look past its annoyances - be it the lack of headphone jack, or dodgy viewing angles - it absolutely is. The company brags that the Pixel 2's camera is the best one on the market, having earned the highest marks ever for a phone from DxO Mark, a respected image rating group. Turn that on and your notification LED should start shining through as notifications do.
But the real-world performance of the Pixel 2 is where it really shines. As a follow-up, the organization touched down in the second largest North American market left to conquer, establishing an office in Toronto, Ontario in June with former CFL commissioner Tom Wright in command. If you say "OK Google" the phone will spring to life.
To make this switch happen, again, just long-press on your home screen and change your wallpaper. Take a picture of a London landmark, for example, and Lens can tell you what building you are looking at and then tell you more about it.
The physical design of smartphones is almost irrelevant at this point.
According to Google, once enabled, this chip will expedite image processing by 5x while using 1/10th the power compared to the main CPU.
So what can this chip do exactly? It's a useful feature, but it can get a little distracting at times. We would have preferred it to aim for a bezel-less design, but that energy was saved for the larger Pixel 2 XL. We're really impressed with the results. We did not see any similar complaints by Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL owners, though the issue might not be specific to first generation Pixel devices.
Inside, the specifications are pretty standard fare.
The front camera has a new retouching option that intends to smooth out flaws like wrinkles and acne.
On paper that's identical to last year's Pixel, but in reality it looks much sharper and clearly more vibrant. The single USB Type-C port recreates the same frustrating problems, such as not being able to listen to headphones and charge at the same time. Strangely relaxing, if utterly pointless. In low light, the Pixel's images have a bit more noise than iPhone 8 shots.
We've been using the Google Pixel 2 for a few days to find out.
SoftwareNaturally, the Google Pixel 2 XL runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and puts Google Assistant, the firm's answer to Apple's Siri and Samsung's Bixby, front and centre. Note that you need to be online to access these. No sir, it also acts as a way to silence incoming calls.
