Virtual Mark Zuckerberg Awkwardly High-Fives His Way Through Hurricane-Ravaged Puerto Rico

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg slammed for Puerto Rico VR video

The results were as discordant as someone slamming their elbows onto a piano.

What prompted outrage and criticism a day earlier was a cartoonish depiction of himself and Rachel Franklin, the company's head of social virtual reality, taking a virtual reality tour of flooded areas of Puerto Rico.

Much of Puerto Rico remains without running water or electricity, and dozens (and more likely hundreds) of people are dead.

Yesterday, Zuckerberg used Facebook's app Spaces to roam through a VR-produced 360 video of Puerto Rico.

On Tuesday Zuckerberg admitted the video had not come across as he intended, saying: 'One of the most powerful features of VR is empathy. It will be exceedingly ironic if the thing that causes Facebook to falter is code that outperforms a world-class programmer and businessperson like Zuckerberg. And meanwhile, the report says, "WPP sought to portray itself as being opposed to gun violence".

In the broadcast avatars of Zuckerberg and Franklin transported between various locations, including the moon and Zuckerberg's living room.

Alexander J Perez complained on Facebook: 'Ok?

Puerto Ricans and local officials have clamored for relief for nearly three weeks, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Guard and other agencies have responded. "Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures", the Facebook founder wrote in a status update at the time. The company also introduced what it calls 3D Posts, which are cartoony, interactive 3D objects that can be crafted using new creative tools in Spaces and then be taken out of VR and posted directly to Facebook.

In demonstrating new virtual reality tech, Facebook's mastermind showed that the future will be tone-deaf, apparently. The company was highlighting a partnership with NetHope and American Red Cross "to restore connectivity and rebuild communities", which is certainly a worthy cause.

"This is a good time to test a mass-market price", said Oculus vice president of content Jason Rubin, regarding the summer season when people have time off from work and more time for play.

Rather than a centralized system that relies on people and processes to provide transparency and trust, blockchain is a decentralized system that can provide transparency and trust without fallible people in the middle. In reality, however, the flooded streets are full of sewage and therefore very dangerous to public health.

Oculus will be watching how the summer price cut performs before it makes a decision to permanently drops the price, Rubin explained.
