Rohingya boat toll rises to 23 as more bodies found

100 000 more Rohingya wait to cross

12 Rohingya Muslim refugees, mostly children, drowned as boat capsized near Bangladesh

The UK state minister praised the people of Bangladesh and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for saving the lives of tens of thousands of Rohingya people by giving them shelter.

The bodies of another nine refugees have washed up in Bangladesh after an overloaded boat carrying scores of desperate Rohingya sank in rough seas, police said Tuesday, taking the confirmed death toll to 23.

More than half a million Rohingya have fled Myanmar since August 25 after insurgent attacks on security forces triggered a violent government crackdown, but the rate had slowed to about 2,000 refugees per day last week, according to aid agencies. Bangladeshi officials say the new camp will help them better handle relief operations and manage security amid fears that dispersed camps could become recruiting grounds for militants. While survivors and other officials claim that there were about 60 - 100 people in the boat which was capsized.

Myanmar's relations with the United Nations have grown increasingly testy since the discovery of World Food Programme-branded biscuits at a suspected militant camp in July prompted the government to accuse the United Nations agency of supporting the insurgents, forcing it to shut down its operations in Rakhine. "We are not where we need to be right now", he said.

Asif Saleh, a senior director with the Bangladeshi relief organization BRAC, said it was targeting installation of 15,000 latrines by October 15 in Rohingya Refugee Camps.

Buddhist Myanmar does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, even though many have lived in Rakhine for generations. "But we did not find him there and his parents don't know where he has gone", he said, adding they were investigating the case.

The UN labelled the conflict in Myanmar as "ethnic cleansing".

Accused of setting fire to villages to encourage the Rohingyas at the outset, the army myanmaraise responds by blaming the rebels rohingyas themselves.

The rebels launched coordinated attacks on about 30 security posts and an army camp on August 25 with the help of hundreds of disaffected Rohingya villagers, many wielding sticks or machetes, killing about a dozen people.

The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim minority who have long faced persecution in Myanmar, which regards them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
