Lewis Hamilton won the Japanese Grand Prix and in doing so, after his Formula One world championship rival Sebastian Vettel failed to finish, has come within touching distance of taking his fourth title.

Hamilton now has a points lead of more than two race wins over Vettel with a maximum 100 on offer from the last four rounds of the season.

"In terms of pace, hopefully we should be closer to our competitors".

Speaking after the clash, Hamilton said: "Max drove an outstanding race and honestly it wasn't an easy one for us at all".

Raikkonen then addressed the issues facing Vettel and the team as a whole.

Hamilton could now claim his fourth world championship at the next round at the Circuit of the Americas.

While Hamilton easily got past Alonso's McLaren, Verstappen was held up slightly (resulting in an investigation into Fernando ignoring blue flags) and this gave Lewis a bit of breathing room. He was, however, exemplary in Saturday's qualifying session. "I couldn't really attack him, but I tried".

Today's result marks the tenth victory for the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows of the 2017 season.

He stopped just after Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who finished second, and made a similar tyre change one lap beforehand to try to 'undercut' the Mercedes.

It is the first time Ricciardo has reached the podium in Japan, with his previous best finish a fourth in 2014. "I was excited to race Sebastian today, but he was obviously very unfortunate", Hamilton said. "The Ferrari guys certainly feel awful at the moment", he told Sky.

Bottas added: "I've definitely learned a lot again from this weekend".

"I could have only dreamed about having such a gap in the standings".

"I'm looking forward to Austin".

"I don't think there is anything, I think it was just low. short shifting which the engine doesn't like so much".

Verstappen pitted a lap earlier than Hamilton, then produced some good laps to cut the lead to 1.7 seconds midway through the race.

Team supremo Toto Wolff described Hamilton's race as "another perfect performance". Yet the Singapore and Malaysia races were trying for a team that is used to setting the pace. He consistently works his way to the podium and that gives him a chance to win if Hamilton and Vettel are to have some issues on the track. "The car balance was getting better and better". Hamilton had left Malaysia last week concerned after his Mercedes had been soundly outpaced by Red Bull and Ferrari.

Then, on lap 5 the Ferrari garage deemed it was bad enough, pulled in Mr. Vettell, and retired him for a DNF at 19th. "Of course it hurts, and we're all disappointed".
