Tropical Storm Nate bringing heavy rains, likely to reach US by Sunday
The U.S. Central Gulf Coast states, eastern Tennessee Valley, and the southern Appalachians will possibly get rainfall totals of from 3 to 6 inches, with a maximum of 12 inches.
Forecasters have warned that the storm, after crossing open water, could hit the northern rim of the US Gulf Coast as a category one hurricane. The bureau also said five drilling rigs had been evacuated and 11 other rigs had been moved out of the path of the storm. If this forecasts holds true, the strongest winds would stay in parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Northwest Georgia. It is now strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico and expected to make landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast between Grand Isle, Louisiana and Panama City Florida. A Hurricane Warning is in effect from Grand Isle to Alabama/Florida border, including metropolitan New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.
Officials in Mississippi and Louisiana have declared states of emergency in anticipation of the storm. It's expected to make landfall late tonight in the Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama corridor.
Some operators in the Gulf of Mexico are evacuating offshore facilities in preparation for the arrival of the storm. No watches or warnings are currently in effect for Southwest Louisiana.
