Lin-Manuel Miranda released his Puerto Rico benefit single Thursday night
"That has no precedent for me, so those words coming out of me also have no precedent". "They'll clear a path", the tweet read.
We have Lin-Manuel Miranda to thank. He recorded a verse at a studio in San Juan but couldn't get enough bandwidth to email it to Miranda. "They're putting on a fearless face for us", he said.
He's using his megastar power not for another blockbuster Broadway show, but rather to help those who lost everything when Hurricane Maria decimated Puerto Rico. I was hoping for an announcement of additional troops on the ground, additional aid.
"We feel stranded", Joe said at the time. "Short of that, I don't need to see another photo op. Following their inspiring lead, I'm compelled to take action and join them to help begin the reconstruction of our lovely country as it starts to recover from these tragic events".
Lin-Manuel Miranda, born the son of Puerto Rican parents, is launched a project to support hurricane relief in the territory. Gloria Estefan in Miami, March 30, 2017.
The success of the Tony Award-winning musical "Hamilton" has made Miranda one of America's most influential Latin celebrities.
And Puerto Rico needs to stay in the spotlight. "Making this song happen, making money flow to relief efforts was my first priority and now we have a long rebuilding process so I'll go wherever I'm needed". (Read the lyrics here.) Earlier in the week, Miranda teased that West Side Story lyricist Stephen Sondheim was involved with the project as well. But the fact, is, Puerto Rico still needs help. In the lyrics of the song, we will be able to hear the names of all the 78 towns in Puerto Rico. "And I began writing a song, hopefully for fundraising relief".
Miranda has also partnered with pretty much every streaming service a person might have in order to make it super easy to donate.
If you would like to contribute to the cause, Miranda's single can be downloaded here.
Miranda described the efforts for the song as "moving mountains".
After sparking headlines and garnering attention, Miranda assured people that while the comment was out of character from his normal twitter feed, it wasn't "impulsive".
