Harrison Ford Can't Remember Ryan Gosling's Name And It's Brilliant
October is upon us and the most highly anticipated film of the month is Blade Runner 2049. Perhaps. He's likely to have more overall support than any film since "No Country for Old Men" this time around, and it's also a great way to honor the late cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth, who shot Ridley Scott's original 1982 film.
With news breaking about Linda Hamilton returning to the Terminator franchise after nearly 30 years and Jamie Lee Curtis coming back for a final Halloween flick - oh, and Harrison Ford starring in Blade Runner 20149 this October 6th - it's a good time to look at other actors who, after long breaks, made their way back to old properties and characters that helped put them on the map. Ryan Gosling is simply known as K, the officer who's searching for Deckard. Re-edited, re-released and re-evaluated, Blade Runner is now one of the most celebrated films of the 1980s, and like all celebrated films of the 1980s, the time has come to turn it into a sequel. Julianne Moore, who previously worked with Haynes in Far From Heaven and Safe, reunites with Haynes in the feature that's adapted by Brian Selznick's book. As I read it, I read about the character that umm, uh...
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve's risky "Arrival" follow-up "Blade Runner 2049" has finally arrived, sending the visionary director from one whirlwind awards season straight into another.
Of course, with or without Jobs, someone would have popularized the modern concept of a smartphone, but it is Villeneuve's second answer that we find more interesting, as it sheds light on the way technology can both aid and hinder modern storytelling. 2049 deftly picks up where its predecessor left off, this time channeling some of its larger themes through character for a more personal experience. One thing is for sure, if this is the case, Harrison Ford will go a little more in the legend. "I insisted to add that", says Villeneuve, "so it will really create a distance with the world". Fancher was one of the writers of the original film and for all the hell he went through for the first film, it's great to see him back in the fold for the sequel; their script could also be a standalone film set in the universe without having watched the original.
Gosling joins the new movie as Officer K, who after uncovering a unsafe secret must hunt down former blade runner Deckard 30 years after he vanished. In "Blade Runner 2049", Los Angeles has sprawled across much of California, and is built on top of Scott's world, the gritty city a melting pot of English, Japanese and Russian influences. So the sequel, whose title Villeneuve stumbles on as he pronounces it "Blade Runner Two Thousand Forty-Nine", is set in "an alternative future".
Though the film is lengthy and moves at a deliberately slow pace - aspects that may keep it at arm's length from more casual audiences - for fans of the original, admirers of thoughtful, mature science fiction and lovers of staggeringly sumptuous cinematic imagery, Villenueve masterfully captures the look and, most importantly, the mood of Scott's wholly original creation. And It's a pretty safe bet that Gosling hit up Puk or another MMA/ Muay Thai trainer to get into Blade Runner shape.
His first English-language film, the 2013 crime-drama Prisoners with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, helped steer his career towards more Hollywood fare, with Enemy and Sicario following in its wake.
