Roy Moore vs. Luther Strange: LIVE election results
Moore vs Strange. Bannon vs Trump. Trump's political analysis is often faulty, but plenty would agree with that. None of it matters as a day of humiliation for this president ends with the rejection of the candidate that he endorsed by his own party.
President Trump added that he would come back to Alabama and campaign for Roy Moore. That loss could now embolden other insurgent primary challengers ahead of the 2018 midterms, potentially threatening the GOP Senate majority.
Trump made his first major electoral intervention as president at McConnell's behest, recording robocalls, holding a rally in Huntsville, and offering repeated support for odd on Twitter as recently as Tuesday morning. "I share that frustration and believe that enacting the agenda the American people voted for last November requires us all to work together". Steve Bannon, the chairman of Breitbart News and former Trump adviser, is backing Moore. He holds a B.A.in politics and economics from Hillsdale College.
"They tried to destroy Donald Trump; the same gang that is going after Roy Moore is the same gang that went after Donald Trump", Bannon said.
He has run a race heavy on God and guns; at a campaign event Monday night, the candidate pulled out his pistol onstage and waved it in the air - to wild applause from the crowd. "It's an ideology that would allow those who think they know the unknowable and the mystic to impose their beliefs on everyone else".
Trump went to Huntsville the previous Friday, where he pitched odd as the most electable general election candidate. "He already has, and he has already helped me", Trump said on the "Rick & Bubba" radio show. I love you but you are wrong! But it will also highlight criticism from some on the right, including Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska, who campaigned for Moore, that Trump hads fallen under the spell of the old-guard Republican establishment in Washington DC.
"Traditionally, in Alabama it has been hard for any popular politician to have coattails in a high-profile race", said Phillip Rawls, Auburn University journalism professor and former AP reporter. If Moore wins the general election, the likely result would be even more chaos in the Senate, with McConnell even less able to marshal his caucus to pass Republican bills.
"We wish him the best as he goes forward", he told supporters.
Moore's unexpected rise follows a history of run-ins with ethics watchdogs in his state. Trump did not seem too upset, however, congratulating unusual on a "good race" and Moore on his victory, and endorsing him in the December election. In 2003, he defied an order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from a state courthouse, and in 2016 he ordered state probate judges not to issue same sex-marriage licenses, in defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling.
Moore has made other inflammatory comments, including claiming that the 9/11 attacks were punishment because the USA had "distanced" itself from God.
In addition to the national backdrop, a number of state factors are at play in the race to fill the remainder of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Senate term.
Odd was hurt by his association to former Governor Robert Bentley, who appointed him to Sessions's seat in February. Robert Bentley in February.
Those events cast a pall over Strange's appointment and raised questions about whether there was a quid pro quo, and the senator struggled to answer the allegations.
Despite Trump winning Alabama in the 2016 general election with 62 percent of the state's vote, according to a poll released by Alabama-based polling firm Cyngal, 31 percent of respondents said his endorsement made them more likely to vote for odd, however 30 percent said it made them more likely to vote for Moore.
Despite that, he is considered an overwhelming favorite in the deep red state against Democrat Doug Jones in December's general election.
