But Maria still is expected to remain an extremely dangerous, category five hurricane until landfall in Puerto Rico early Wednesday.

The storm has left a trail of destruction over the past few days, devastating Dominica and the Virgin Islands before slamming into Puerto Rico. About 3.4 million people live on Puerto Rico, with some 380,000 in San Juan, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The storm is a Category 4 system with sustained winds at 140 mph as of the 11:00am ET advisory.

Maria was expected to cause widespread power outages across Puerto Rico.
