But, at the same time, there was grudging admiration of Modi - the prime minister's communication skills for instance.

Gandhi also said that the government's decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes has led to decline in economic growth. He said that unlike the BJP and RSS, the Congress believed in conversation.

Notwithstanding the BJP Congress sparring after his address, many feel Gandhi's outing went off well, without his characteristic faux pas, apart from getting the Lok Sabha strength wrong.

Irani further said the "failed dynast" chose to speak about his "failed political career" on foreign soil, after he failed to connect with the people of India.

In his address in the California University, Rahul attacked Modi, blaming him for the violence in Kashmir and saying he had "opened up space for terrorists in the valley". "The people of the country where he leads a political party no longer support him so he is expressing his pain overseas", she said. "They do exist", he added.

The Congress leader said India's achievement was in lifting the largest number of people out poverty in a democratic fashion. There are also people who happen to have a father, or a grandmother or a great grandfather in politics.

Even some Congress leaders privately wondered "where from has this new line come" as Rahul had forcefully argued against dynastic successions in the initial years of his political career and enforced internal elections in the Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India to establish merit as the sole criterion for advancement. Patra replied that Gandhi saying India is a country of dynasts, and that India works like this is demeaning and deplorable. She added that the people of the country, where he leads a political party, no longer support him so he is expressing his pain overseas. "Akhilesh Yadav is a dynast; Mr Stalin is a dynast; Mr Dhumal's son (Anurag Thakur) is a dynast; even Mr Abhishek Bachchan is a dynast", he said.

Ms Irani, who led the charge for the BJP hit-back, described Mr Gandhi as a "failed dynast". He however said that final decision would rest with the party.

Reacting to the admission by Mr Gandhi on the arrogance in the Congress, Mr Prasad said, "the Congress vice- president is still not admitting the real reason for his party's defeat". "The core architecture of the BJP schemes is ours".

Gandhi also criticised one of Modi government's flagship projects-demonetisation, which he said was a "self-inflicted wound". He, however, noted that India could not follow the coercive system of China to create jobs. "But India doesn't want or need China's coercive model", he added.
