Some 650,000 Tampa Bay homes and businesses lost power overnight, adding to a total of more than 3.5 million across Florida, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Irma made history by making landfall in the Florida Keys as a category four hurricane - the first time in recorded history that two category four hurricanes have hit the US back-to-back.

The storm could potentially flood creeks and rivers.

But behind Irma was a trail of destruction.

The massive storm was one of the main news topics over the past week, causing enormous damage across the Caribbean and Florida. Significant damage on Cuba Hurricane Irma killed at least 20 people in the Caribbean and left dozens more injured across several island nations in the Atlantic Ocean.

Images out of Polk County, Florida shows the devastation occurring as first responders attempted to go out into the storm.

Florida Governor Rick Scott on Monday warned the path to recovery from Irma would be long and hard, particularly for the worst-hit Keys island chain that bore the brunt of the storm's destructive force.

Silagy called the outages "unprecedented" and of a "magnitude we just haven't seen before".

We aren't now as concerned with this storm as we have been with Irma, however, it bears watching over the next week.

The storm is expected to further weaken as it moves through Columbus and then northwest through Alabama and into Tennessee.

Almost 1.1 million people across Florida did not have power on Sunday, according to The Associated Press. "We have no cell service, no electricity, and no water", Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers said. Most areas are still without power and water. It flooded streets and coasts, swamped homes, uprooted massive trees, cast boats ashore, snapped power lines and toppled construction cranes.

"This is going to be a very, very lengthy restoration, arguably the most lengthy restoration and most complex in US history", he said, asking that customers be patient.

On Saturday night, September 9th, Hurricane Irma made landfall off the coast of Florida. About 2,000 customers there are still without power.

The storm even produced some tornadoes.
