According to the New York Times, the ruling in favor of Windsor was the first time married same-sex couples received federal recognition.

She had sued the U.S. government after being ordered to pay $363,053 in federal estate tax after her previous wife, Thea Spyer, died. Thus began her uphill battle against the Supreme Court for same-sex marriage equality.

Windsor's long partnership with her wife the clinical psychologist Thea Spyer, who died in 2009, inspired millions of people both within the LGBTQ rights movement and those who would not have necessarily given gay rights a second thought.

Concerned that an engagement ring would bring unwanted attention to Windsor's sexual orientation, Spyer gave her a diamond brooch instead.

Citing a void in her life after the death of Ms. Spyer, Ms. Windsor "found love" again after meeting Ms. Karen-Windsor at a 2015 Hamptons Tea Dance. She pursued her case all the way to the highest course in the land, and in a narrow ruling in 2013, the court decided that the federal government must abide by the laws of individual states in its dealings with couples from those states. "We extend our sympathies to her wife, Judith Kasen-Windsor, and all those who were touched by this wonderful woman".

She was helping to create a new statewide gay rights group after Empire State Pride Agenda, the state's leading LGBT group, disbanded in 2015. Thea was "playing the field" when she met Edie at the restaurant but life comes at you fast, doesn't it?

Ms. Spyer was suffering from multiple sclerosis at the time, and died two years later.

"Two years later, to the day, we took another step forward on our journey as the Supreme Court recognized a Constitutional guarantee of marriage equality". Thea Spyer and Windsor became a lifelong couple and in 1967, Spyer proposed. In a 5-4 decision, US v. Windsor, the majority said DOMA violated the Fifth Amendment guarantee that no person shall be "deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law".

She had been engaged to her brother's friend Saul Windsor and married him later after falling in love with a female classmate. The harpsichord in her apartment held awards attesting to her advocacy from the likes of the American Civil Liberties Union and National Organization for Women. "We are grateful for her perseverance and tenacity, and she will be forever remembered as an iconic symbol of love and equality".

Former President Barack Obama, who said he spoke to Windsor a few days ago, posted a tribute on Facebook in one of the many accolades that poured in from the political, entertainment and LGBT circles. Edith felt deeply the injustice of being denied the right to marry her partner of more than 40 years, and she committed herself to fighting back with determination and a smile.

According to the Advocate, a public memorial will be held September 15 in NY.
