Irma was at one point the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic, with winds up to 185 miles per hour (298 kph). "As soon as the wind shifts direction, the water will come back quickly and continue to move inland", CNN meteorologist Judson Jones said. Tornadoes are also possible Monday. Nearly every mobile home park in the Keys had overturned homes, according to the governor.

While damage to Florida's west coast was less severe than forecasts anticipated, Gov. Rick Scott told residents to brace for a lengthy recovery.

Officials have declared a flash flood emergency in Charleston, South Carolina. Authorities are still surveying damage from the record-breaking storm, and this story will be updated as more details emerge.

Some 166,000 people in Georgia, including more than 17,000 in the city of Savannah, lost power as the outer bands of the storm lashed the state.

In the state's northeastern corner, Jacksonville felt the brunt of Irma's storm surges as the banks of the city's rivers and tributaries overflowed, inundating city streets.

The National Hurricane Center said Irma is expected to remain powerful as it heads north along the state's Gulf Coast.

Lee County did not see the catastrophic storm surge that officials were bracing for.

Georgia reported more than 570,000 homes and businesses without electricity, and there were 80,000 in SC.

In mainland U.S., Irma's death toll reached 10 on Monday night, with six deaths confirmed in Florida, three in Georgia and one in SC.

So far, few images of the damage have popped up, as the storm takes its final breaths on Florida.

South Carolina Electric & Gas reported more than 13,000 customers without service Monday morning.

The governor said he was directing the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to activate the state's emergency operations plan due to the potential for dangers associated with excessive rainfall, strong winds, flooding, fallen trees and road closures. "It's not going to be what you're seeing in Tampa", he said.

At least five people died of storm-related injuries in Florida as the massive hurricane barreled across the Sunshine State.

Other parts of the South, including Alabama, Tennessee and the Carolinas could be affected by the storm as well in the coming days, as its trajectory moves away from the Florida coast.

Puerto Rico says it collaborated with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to evacuate more than 1,000 people, mainly U.S. citizens, from St. Thomas and St. Maarten.
