Rafael Nadal has won the US Open, his 16th career Grand Slam title.

When Nadal reclaimed the World No 1 ranking last month, it was the first since in more than three years he had topped the list. After temporarily ending their age- and injury-related declines, these two hugely popular performers would now slide back slowly towards retirement, having provided tennis fans everywhere with a memorable last curtain call. I have the trophy with me again here in NY.

'To step out on court against Rafa tonight, you know, I learned a lot of lessons. Not only is she now a bona-fide grand- slam champion, but she may now be the No.1 commercial entity in women's tennis. Among men, only Roger Federer has more, with 19. "For me, it's no different than the other [15] times when he won a grand-slam tournament". It wasn't Woods first visit to Nadal's booth either - he was there for the semifinal. The Spaniard was not to be denied, and it showed early.

"I still have the passion and the love for the game". Conversely, Nadal lost just 15 points in his 14 service games, never faced a break point, and won an astounding 70% of his second serve points.

Anderson and Nadal played as 12-year-olds, but their careers went in different directions. "I put a lot of balls in. I guess time will tell on that". Since then Federer has held the upper hand including inflicting defeat three times in 2017. "That changed the rest of the match".

"Well done for Roger that he is having an incredible season, too, and well done for me because I'm having a great season, too". When his world ranking, once as high as four, slumped to 1,045 previous year, he even pondered retirement.

Before now, Nadal had won the US Open in 2010 and 2013. "But here we are, and can just say thanks to life for that opportunity". I have a great team and a great family that supports me and believes in me. "I wouldn't be playing tennis if it wasn't for uncle Toni".

As for Federer, the Swiss superstar is now just three Grand Slam titles ahead of Nadal's count of 16. Is everything I've been seeing about Donald Trump and Brexit and an imminent nuclear war with North Korea really just a long and awful odd dream, and in fact what I thought was real life was only actually a scary fantasy? He does his way.

As with so many tournaments in the past, the US Open was seen as a showdown between these two giants of the game. "I really don't think much about these kinds of things".

"Of course I am surprised", said Nadal.

"For me, what is more important, more than winning slams is to be happy", said the 31-year- old Spaniard, "I am happy if I am healthy, and happy if I feel competitive and that's what happened this year".
