STRANGE Hurricane Irma left Long Island beach in the Bahams with no water
Irma made landfall on Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm at Cudjoe Key, about 75 miles from Key Largo, where the NBC 6 helicopter was flying.
The storm killed at least 28 people as it raged westward through the Caribbean en route to Florida, devastating several small islands, and grazing Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti before pummeling parts of Cuba's north coast with 36-foot-tall (11-meter) waves.
One Naples resident tried to captured footage and was nearly hit by a tree.
The State Department said Monday that US embassies and consulates have reopened in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas, Barbados and Curaçao, although services were limited.
Georgia and SC are expected to face flooding later in the week as the storm continues north, with Tennessee and Alabama also likely to be affected though the power of the hurricane is expected to significantly subside.
Hurricane Irma was so strong it actually dragged water out of the sea with a negative surge. In Miami, streets were turned into rivers as water poured in from the storm surge, and construction cranes collapsed under the force of 100 miles per hour (180 km/h) winds.
In Jacksonville, at the far northeast corner of Florida, Irma set a new coastal flood record, beating the one set during 1964's Hurricane Dora.
In the Jacksonville area, close to the Georgia line, storm surge brought some of the worst flooding ever seen there, with at least 46 people pulled from swamped homes.
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said the situation was not as bad as it could have been but warned residents that unsafe storm surge continued.
Irma, which made landfall in Florida on Sunday (10 September) as a category four hurricane, has left flooding in parts of the state, including Miami, while some 3.4m homes are without power.
The storm's impact was widespread.
After Irma hit The Bahamas one beach was reduced to what looked like a field of mud as the water was displaced thanks to a negative surge caused by the storm. "Food packets, water, and some essential supplies have been distributed to those affected". Included in the rescue personnel, he said, are "disaster mortuary teams", which are tasked with victim identification and forensics. Pray for us. We need volunteers, nurses.
Irma is expected to sap demand for fuel for a time, analysts at Goldman Sachs said in a note Monday, though they cautioned that supply could remain strained because of limits to refining capacity caused by Hurricane Harvey, which hit Texas two weeks ago.
