Irma crossed over the Florida Keys Sunday morning and was headed for the state's southwest coast with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles (215 kilometers) per hour, making it a unsafe Category 4 storm, the second worst on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Hurricane Irma has been blamed for at least five deaths in Florida, two in the state of Georgia and two in South Carolina. It killed at least 35 people as it tore through islands in the Caribbean last week. Parts of the state as of Saturday morning are included in the so-called "cone of uncertainty".
Trump, who gave the assurance in a tweet and his weekly address to the country saturday, pointed out that Hurricane Irma was of epic proportion.
- Georgia was already feeling the effects of the storm, with more than 17,000 customers without power in Savannah.
Meanwhile, Irma has hit the Florida Keys, a chain of islands off the southern tip of Florida, with hurricane-grade winds.

He said the Navy dispatched the USS Iwo Jima, USS New York and the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to help with search and rescue and other relief efforts.
Over the next two days, Irma is expected to push to the northwest, into Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
In South Carolina, the Charleston Harbor area saw major flooding on Monday with water about 3 feet (1 meter) above flood stage and minor flooding is forecast for Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
"If we had evacuated, we maybe would have evacuated to Tampa or Naples, which would have been right into the storm", he noted.
DeHaan said it will take several days for ports to reopen, barges to be unloaded and for fuel to be delivered to gas stations.
Now Irma is set to move through South/Central Georgia as a Tropical Storm through this evening.
Irma is a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour with higher gusts.
The current track of Irma will bring severe and life- threatening impacts to all of the Florida Keys and a large portion of the Florida Peninsula, including Key West, Key Largo, Tampa, Fort Myers, Naples, Sarasota and Miami.
Many streets were flooded in downtown Miami and other cities. Highs will struggle to make it higher than the 60s both Tuesday and Wednesday. "Due to the size of the storm, all of Georgia may potentially be impacted, regardless of Hurricane Irma's exact track".
"I was here through Andrew but I didn't see wind and rain like this".
Despite the widespread destruction, the once-Category 5 storm had lost much of its punch over Cuba, possibly sparing Florida an even worse fate. The Key West International Airport measured sustained winds of 50 miles per hour (80 kph) with a gust of up to 70 miles per hour (113 kph), according to the hurricane center.
Meanwhile, thousands of military personnel have responded to relief efforts, including Army National Guard soldiers in Florida and SC.
Power losses in Georgia, which were nearing 900,000 as of 3 p.m. EDT, were expected to increase as the storm moved north.
Farther to the west, the weather service in Mobile said to expect gusty northerly to northeasterly winds Sunday and Monday.
