A weakening but still potent Irma lashed Florida's Gulf Coast with tree-bending winds, pounding rain and surging surf since making landfall yesterday. As many as 6 million people were expected to leave the Sunshine State to get out of Irma's path.

Irma prompted the largest evacuation in USA history of 7 million residents, or 30%, of Florida's population, according to Accuweather.

The power outages are expected to increase as the storm edges further north. State officials were asking residents and visitors to wait a bit longer before returning to their homes and businesses on Monday.

Powerful winds from Hurricane Irma battered Florida with forecasters warning of risky strom surges that will lead to massive flooding across the U.S. state, media reports said.

Gastesi says they are "prepared for the worst". Irma first came ashore at Cudjoe Key as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 215 kmph. Now he sees furniture floating down the street with small boats.

Several storm surge warnings are still in effect, the most urgent extending from South Santee River to Fernandina Beach (1.2 to 1.8m) and Clearwater Beach to Ochlockonee River (1.2 to 1.8m).

Irma made landfall on the Keys early Sunday morning with triple-digit wind gusts and heavy rain that had already wrecked havoc in the Caribbean.

It finally hit the mainland as a big wide beast, but not quite as monstrous as once feared.

The disturbance has now been downgraded to tropical storm status.
