Equifax's Response To Their Massive Security Breach Has Been Almost As Unpopular As The Hack Itself

How to protect yourself in the wake of the Equifax data breach

Adding to Equifax's legal troubles is a proposed class action by customers affected by the breach.

THE WEBSITE that Equifax is advising that customers visit to check whether they've been impacted the recent breach on its systems by is "completely broken" and returning random results for concerned Americans.

Then, request a copy of your credit report.

Monitor your credit card statements carefully. That link can be found here. Given that we don't know the extent of the information breached, it's likely this reaches further into data that Equifax transforms as part of its marketing and analytic services.

Consumers have been frantically Googling for information on Symantec's LifeLock consumer identity theft protection unit, according to Credit Suisse analyst Brad Zelnick, who analyzed search trends from Alphabet Inc.

Check your free credit reports.

There's some comfort in the fact that Silicon Valley's tech giants generally seem way more trustworthy than your typical credit reporting agencies, which have at times been comically hostile to the interests of consumers. It's important to remember that while a credit freeze offers powerful protection, and a fraud alert may also be useful, neither is a guarantee.

Equifax will not be contacting everyone who was affected, but will send direct mail notices to those whose credit card numbers or dispute records were accessed.

Leach noted that if an unauthorized person opens a credit account in the name of a consumer and incurs debts, the consumer is not legally obligated to pay those debts. Consumers can also check their credit report for free each year at

Equifax set up a site,, where you can type in your last name and six digits of your Social Security number to find out if your data may have been compromised. So each time you apply for a credit card, mortgage or loan, you need to lift the freeze a few days beforehand.

The Information Commisioner's Office takes a hard line on data breaches but it nethertheless willing to lend its aid. Google has a lot of this, plus the email inboxes of more than a billion people.

Regulatory filings show that on August 1, Chief Financial Officer John Gamble sold shares worth $946,374, and Joseph Loughran, president of USA information solutions, exercised options to dispose of stock worth $584,099.

The hackers gained access to important information belonging to 143 million US consumers after exploiting a vulnerability on the company's website.

"I can not recall a previous data breach in which the breached company's public outreach and response has been so haphazard and ill-conceived as the one coming right now from big-three credit bureau Equifax", Krebs said.

Along with the lawsuit, it has also raised public attention when it was reported that three Equifax executives, John Gamble, Rodolfo Ploder and Joseph Loughran, had sold their shares prior to the data hack, according to the SEC.
