Putin to US: Don't play along with North Korea

Putin: North Korea Will 'Eat Grass' Before Giving Up Nukes

The official cast doubt on attempts to prevent North Korea from obtaining a nuclear weapon using methods employed in the past, suggesting the country's intentions are unlike those of other nations with nuclear ambitions.

Haley's call for new sanctions, "could lead to an enormous humanitarian disaster in North Korea, hurting millions of women and children and innocent people" said the newspaper, in an editorial. Dozens of people were injured in clashes between South Korean protesters and police Thursday as the USA military added more launchers to the high-tech missile-defense system it installed in a southern town to better cope with North Korean threats.

Putin, for his part, will meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in Wednesday at a long planned conference in Vladivostok.

The United States has called for a vote on Monday on a UN resolution that would impose the toughest-ever sanctions on North Korea, a move that could lead to a showdown with the country's biggest trading partner China and its neighbour Russian Federation. Many are now watching to see what conclusion is reached on potential North Korea sanctions - including those related to crude oil supplies - at a South Korea-Russia summit scheduled to take place in Vladivostok on September 6. It also provides hundreds of thousands of tonnes of oil and fuel to the impoverished regime.

The drafting a new sanctions resolution, which could include a proposal to block oil sales to North Korea.

At their meeting, South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha and Japan's Taro Kono said that close cooperation among Seoul, Washington and Tokyo is paramount in dealing with North Korea. Two launchers had already been deployed.

Beijing lodged a diplomatic protest with Seoul Thursday demanding the withdrawal of THAAD.

If North Korea is recognized as a state armed with nuclear weapons, South Korea and Japan are likely to seek to possess nukes in response.

Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House armed services committee, said he felt Mattis and Tillerson had effectively the same message as Trump when it came to North Korea.

Abe vowed to try and persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to impose an oil embargo on North Korea. "But it they do what they do, while they are not silly at all, it means that they expect a certain response from their opponents", the Russian leader noted. While Mattis reminded North Korea that the US had military options available to it, he also said that the USA doesn't seek the "total annihilation" of the North. Mattis and other top officials also have made it clear that the US has not closed the door on diplomacy, contrary to what Trump has suggested.

President Trump noted that this latest provocation only serves to increase the global community's resolve to counter North Korea's prohibited activities.

To May, Trump stressed "now is not the time to talk to North Korea" and that "all options remain open to defend the United States and its allies".

But neither side appears willing to budge.

He called on all North Korea's neighbours to show restraint, suggesting the bellicose rhetoric and military drills are "playing into their hands".
