Disney's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Casts Billy Magnussen as New Character (Exclusive)

Disney's live-action Aladdin casts Billy Magnussen in original role

The new Disney live-action remake of the classic 1992 film will also feature another royal blue blood, played by Billy Magnussen.

In an age where whitewashing is still a widespread issue in Hollywood, companies like Disney still don't seem to grasp the concept. The 1992 original didn't feature any white characters. Will Smith, who will be playing the genie, posted a photo on Facebook, confirming the start of production.

Guy Ritchie will direct the upcoming film, with Mena Massoud in the titular role of "Aladdin" and Will Smith to play the Genie.

"Was it really necessary for you to throw a white dude in the movie, Disney?". However, some have complained that the filmmakers should have only chosen Middle Eastern actors for the project, instead of, say, British-Indian Naomi Scott.

Directed by Sherlock Holmes helmer Guy Ritchie and The Lego Movie producer Dan Lin, Aladdin is yet another installment into Disney's ever-growing pantheon of live-action remakes. They didn't have more details, but Prince Anders is the second original role we know about, after Nasim Pedrad was cast as Mara. At first, they opened auditions only for actors from the Middle East. 32-year-old Magnussen is joining relative newcomer Mena Massoud and "Power Rangers" actress Naomi Scott who have been tapped to play Aladdin/Prince Ali and Princess Jasmine respectively.

After the success of Disney's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, fans were understandably excited for Aladdin to get the same live-action treatment.

It's been widely reported that finding the flawless actors to portray Aladdin and Jasmine was challenging for casting directors. The addition of Billy Magnussen hasn't helped the negative press already surrounding the film, which has yet to secure a release date.
