The unnamed 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, Camille of 1969 and Andrew of 1992 all struck Florida and the Gulf Coast as the highest level tropical systems.

The chance that Irma will make a direct impact on Florida "continues to increase", the National Weather Service says, adding that it's too early to specify the timing and magnitude.

Experts at the National Hurricane Centre in the U.S. have predicted 185mph winds and gusts of up to 200mph.

"The dangerousness of this event is like nothing we've ever seen", Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said.

Rick Scott warned residents about the potential dangers from Hurricane Irma Wednesday, saying the Category 5 storm could be more risky than 1992's Hurricane Andrew.

Sir Richard Branson, the billionaire entrepreneur and founder Virgin Group, is riding out Hurricane Irma in a wine cellar along with his team on Necker Island, a private Caribbean island he purchased decades ago. "If you have outdoor furniture that's loose and fly around tie it up put it inside", he said.

Latest paths for the storm have it impacting almost the entire state of Florida, and potentially further up the East Coast into the Carolinas.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised Britons to follow the instructions of local authorities, including any evacuation orders.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Katia has formed in the Gulf off the coast of Mexico with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph).

Florida senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio also advised residents throughout Florida to be prepared with at least 72 hours worth of supplies.

The American Red Cross is basing its statewide relief efforts out of Charlotte.

At the time, it was about 175 miles north of Veracruz, Mexico (about 800 miles south of Hurricane Harvey-damaged Houston) and moving in an east-southeast direction at a speed of 5 mph, according to the latest NHC bulletin.

Schou said the organization is working to get disaster responders ready to help. "We do have others inbound from other states". The Associated Press reports residents say phone lines went down as the eye passed.

Officials in the nearby French territory of Guadeloupe confirmed that on St Barts, the fire brigade station had been flooded with a metre of water, there is a total power blackout and many roofs have been blown off.
