Federer won in straight sets after back-to-back five-set victories

Nadal hadn't reached the quarter-finals in Flushing Meadows since the last of his two U.S. Open titles in 2013.

For Roger Federer it was one of those few occasions when a final got away from him.

Federer won his fourth-round match over 33rd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Yesh: Dolgopolov's upset win over Berdych was impressive, even if his first round wasn't.

But whenever he plays, the magic is not far behind, especially when he is on the biggest stages.

More erratic play from Thiem allowed Del Potro to power through the tie break and level the match a set apiece. Not enough for one year?

Still, the Austrian had two match points in the following game at 15-40, but Del Potro held on with two thundering serves - both of which were aces.

Suffice to say, this gentleman of the courts has become a hero in his homeland and one of the tour's favourites worldwide.

Del Potro is not the player he was eight years, but the power in his groundstrokes remains there and his spirit remains as dogged as ever, as Thiem will attest.

The final set saw him take on the seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, who he sent out easily in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 thrashing.

Del Potro's incredible recovery from two sets down to beat Dominic Thiem in the last round was the best match of tournament.

The top-seeded woman had even less trouble than Nadal did: 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova beat 91st-ranked American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 6-0.

They finally seemed to kick in for the third set, when Del Potro found his heavyweight punch of a forehand and began to land some blows on Thiem.

But cometh the hour, cometh the man.

Del Potro stopped him once before, and it will not be for lack of effort and passion, if the Argentine comes up short this time around. The Argentine powered to a 6-1 set in half an hour. A newfound energy guided him to another break of Thiem (pictured below) for 5-1 and all of a sudden the match was into a fourth set.

At 5-0, he took a tablet.

Steen: Thiem has never lost to Mannarino, the Frenchman should keep it close given his good form, but Thiem has too big of a game as long as he can adjust his timing to fit Mannarino's loopy game. The answer was a resounding yes. Clearly Grandstand wasn't where it used to be. "Obviously not as much riding on this match like it was in 2009".

Dolgopolov, who gave a vague answer on Wednesday before shutting down the topic, said: "I already said everything that could be said, and you guys want to give me again the same questions. I think the people like that".

As Federer was dispatching Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets nearby, inside cavernous Arthur Ashe Stadium, he could hear the roars from the nearby Grandstand.

We have Roger on one side of the court, having some problems with his back, exhausted a little bit. They know what I have been through with all my wrist problems.

"I wasn't really affected by the easy first two sets". To see him back, happy and winning and beating the best players in the world is wonderful for our sport. It was a good match.

The quarter-finals of the US Open are going to be great.

The Frenchman got off to a blistering start on the Louis Armstrong Court. "I was sick the last two days".

Now the Swiss third seed has set his sights on trying to change the result from 2009, which ended his five-year winning run in NY.

And reading between the lines, it was a loss that cut deep.

"I felt like that I left that match with a lot of regrets".

"I think I played the best match of the tournament".
