But what should you do with those sun-gazing glasses once the eclipse has come and gone, especially considering the next total solar eclipse in North America won't be until April 2024?

The idea is to give them to people for upcoming eclipses over parts of South America, Africa, and Asia between now and 2020.

The Calabasas, Calif. -based nonprofit says it is developing a corporate-backed plan to collect the millions of glasses bought by viewers in the United States before the August 21 solar eclipse. Most versions of the eyewear are only certified safe for three years. To make sure you get (or got) your eclipse glasses/viewers from a supplier of ISO-compliant products, see the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page.

Some glasses say they expire in a few years, but that information is likely outdated.

Lastly, those of you who'd like to save your eclipse glasses as a souvenir to remember the celestial event can do just that.

Back on Quartz, they have other suggested don'ts, including tweeting and instagramming photos of your dogs in eclipse glasses. As for the filter lenses, some camera stores might recycle them. "And then recycle the remainder of the cardboard".

Many local libraries distributed glasses at no charge, but they won't be taking them back. The organization has yet to announce an address for donors to send eclipse glasses to but are trying to spread the word. As long as you pop out the lenses, you can happily throw your glasses frames in the recycling bin knowing that you aren't adding to environmental waste. Yay!
