"Guam is the largest island between Hawaii and the Philippines, and it has a natural deep seawater port", says Robert Underwood, former Guam delegate to the U.S. Congress and current president at the University of Guam.
"Trump would probably take military action if North Korea attacks Guam, but would probably not if North Korean missiles fall around the island", a Japanese government source said.
North Korea wouldn't stand a chance against the U.S. if the war of words between the two states escalates into a military conflict, Leonid Ivashov, a political analyst and retired Russian Colonel-General, told RT, urging a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
And yet the islnd often exposed to threats coming at America.
The naval base dates to 1898, when the USA took over Guam from Spain after the Spanish-American War.

Speaking to Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo, he promised: "You are safe".
The country's military leaders are finalizing a plan to present to Kim Jong Un in mid-August to fire four intermediate-range Hwasong-12 missiles over Japan to land less than 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Guam, state media reported Thursday. It's unclear whether Japan would reposition any of its warships to defend the area around Guam. The U.S. territory is home to Andersen Air Force Base.
"The powerful revolutionary Paektusan army of the DPRK, capable of fighting any war the USA wants, is now on the standby to launch fire into its mainland, waiting for an order of final attack", it said.
It's not the first time North Korea has threatened Guam, which is a crucial, strategic hub for USA forces in the Pacific. The 163,000 residents that make up Guam's population, which includes 6,000 US service members, are considered USA citizens. Altogether, 7,000 US military personnel are stationed on Guam.
The White House says Trump also told Xi he looked forward to seeing him in China later this year.
The territory has struggled economically and is known to investors for its municipal bonds, which have so far been relatively unaffected by the saber rattling between Trump and Kim.
Guam's congresswoman, Madeleine Z. Bordallo, also weighed in.
In South Korea, where both the military and civilians are used to facing threats from North Korea, Defense Minister Song Young-moo warned the country's armed forces "to maintain full readiness" to "immediately punish with powerful force" any action against the South.
Of course, if the USA determines that North Korea has launched a missile targeting the USA, the President would have to decide whether to retaliate. Trying to intercept the missiles, however, would open up a whole new range of potential dangers.
Having experienced a Japanese invasion in World War Two and countless earthquakes and super-typhoons, there was no United States community better prepared than Guam "for any contingency", Calvo, dressed in a light blue tropical shirt, said in an interview at his office.

In commodities, US. crude fell 0.67 per cent to $49.23 per barrel and Brent was last at $52.58, down 0.23 per cent on the day. Shanghai's main index also tumbled 1.6 percent to 3,208.54 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.2 percent to 5,693.10.

The white metal's almost 3% rise Wednesday was the sharpest daily gain since September 21, 2016, according to FactSet data. An index of 15 gold miners tracked by Bloomberg Intelligence climbed 1.1 per cent, led by Toronto-based Yamana Gold Inc.
