North Korea details missile launch plan

On Thursday, Trump said that "maybe" his statement to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea "wasn't tough enough".

China, North Korea's most important ally and trading partner, has reiterated calls for calm during the current crisis.

"We have been working very closely with China and with other countries".

The regime was further angered by last week's United Nations decision to increase economic sanctions against it.

Chinese state television cited Trump as telling Xi that he fully understands the role China has been playing on the North Korean nuclear issue.

Tensions have escalated rapidly in recent weeks after North Korea tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July.

The Chinese leader again urged his U.S. counterpart and the North to refrain from words or actions that would escalate the crisis and reiterated that a peaceful resolution was the only option.

Trump responded to North Korea's threat to hit Guam by mid-August with a threat of his own.

Trump, responding to a report that USA intelligence indicates Pyongyang can now put a nuclear warhead on its long-range missiles, vowed to rain down "fire and fury" if challenged.

The escalation in rhetoric by Trump - which some US leaders and allies have criticized - comes as North Korea has stepped up its threats against the United States, including a potential missile launch landing near the USA territory of Guam.

Firstly, China's leadership doesn't see this as their problem - their officials consistently call on all sides to exercise restraint, while proposing their own "dual freeze" initiative - where the USA and South Korea suspend military exercises in return for a freeze of the North's nuclear and missile programmes.

But he added: "Hopefully, it will all work out".

South Korea has almost 19,000 bomb shelters throughout the country but not many are aware of them despite growing North Korean threats.

The North's unusually precise statement regarding Guam said its four missiles would be launched simultaneously and overfly the Japanese prefectures of Shimane, Hiroshima and Kochi.

Tillerson said that the President prefers a diplomatic solution.

The release came just days after North Korea's army said in a statement that it was reviewing a plan to attack the USA territory.

In a statement Saturday, Macron said the situation "undermines the preservation of global peace" and the North Korean regime "poses a serious threat to the security of its neighbors".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said diplomacy was the answer: "Germany will very intensively take part in the options for resolution that are not military but I consider a verbal escalation to be the wrong response".

In a call with Guam Governor Eddie Calvo yesterday, Mr Trump said the USA military is prepared to "ensure the safety and security of the people of Guam" in response to Pyongyang's plans to launch missiles towards the Pacific territory. The diplomats are also likely talking about security concerns as tensions between the two countries rise.

The regime was further angered by last week's United Nations decision to increase economic sanctions against it.

Japan has also assured its support for the island should an attack be imminent.

The backchannel communications, which began shortly after Trump's negotiation, have carried on to the present day and could "be a foundation for more serious negotiation, including on North Korea's nuclear weapons", according to the AP.

Military officials will move ahead with planned drills between the US and South Korea.

Australia has invoked the treaty just once, in 2001, when it joined United States troops in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks.

"We have an ANZUS agreement and if there is an attack on Australia or the USA then each of us will come to the other's aid", he told 3AW.
