The victor of every individual Olympic and world championships final in the 100 and 200 that he has started-Bolt was disqualified for a false start in the 100 at the 2011 world championships-he couldn't walk down the United States' 21-year-old Christian Coleman (second in 9.94), who burst out of the starting blocks, and was unable to hold off Gatlin's frantic push over the last 30 meters of the battle.

Usain Bolt hugs Justin Gatlin after the American won the 100m final at the World Athletics Championships in London.

The crowd's dissatisfaction was less audible when Gatlin stepped on top of the podium to collect his medal, but some fans did make their displeasure known. He always did look his most imperious with a rolling start and he still holds the fastest 100m relay leg time, an unreal 8.65 seconds.

"You guys call it losses, losses, losses", Gatlin said.

"I wanted to pay homage", Gatlin told reporters.

The fastest man in the world (9 seconds and 58 hundredths of a second on 100 m, 19 seconds 19 hundredths of a second) feared for his put into action, after having pestered against starting blocks not firm enough to his liking, the sleep at the end of the series.

During Friday's competition, the most jaw-dropping result in a week of upsets came in the women's steeplechase, where the United States clinched an unlikely 1-2 finish.

In semifinals earlier that same day, Bolt finished a narrow second to Coleman, but neither man seemed to be pushing it to the limit in the final meters. This is why it is, indeed, a sad tale for athletics that it was Justin Gatlin, a 35-year-old athlete who has had a drug blemished career that is now the world 100 meters champion. Gatlin also ran for Tennessee before turning pro following his sophomore season in Knoxville.

Of course, at the 2012 Olympics it wasn't just the Brits that were the star attraction the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt being one of the most memorable winners. His charisma is one-of-a-kind and his legacy will forever be intact in a sport he forever changed for the better.

But in the back of his mind, reality was setting in: "After the semifinal, I knew if I didn't get my start, I was going to be in trouble", he said.

After the race, Gatlin bowed down to Bolt as if saluting a king or being remorseful for ruining the Jamaican's chance of ending his career with a record fourth gold medal in the blue-ribbon 100m. Since then, Bolt went on to win many gold medals, made and broke records, and gained the status of a greatest-of-all-time (GOAT).

This much was attested to by no other athletic personality than the legendary Michael Johnson whose 200 meters record Bolt shattered.

It's not all over. On Saturday, it felt surreal to anyone who's been at one of these Bolt victories before. It was the first global men's 100 or 200m final since 2003 not to feature a U.S. or Jamaican medalist.

Instead it has all been about the pantomime villain ahead of the pair, 35-year-old Justin Gatlin, a man with a drug-stained past.
