After last month's Presidential election of Ram Nath Kovind, the new Vice President Venkaiah Naidu was sworn in being the 13th person to hold the constitutional post.
A day before he takes oath as India's next vice president, he said his advice to politicians is not to drag communities into politics.
"The Constitutional posts now are represented by people who are from humble background".
Naidu said politicians must not look at each other as enemies but as "rivals" in their common endeavour of "working hard to strengthen the country and help people".
PM Narendra Modi said, "It showed the maturity of Indian democracy and the strength of India's Constitution". He is a farmer's son.
Leader of the opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad congratulated Naidu for becoming the Chairman of Rajya Sabha and said, "You have been given a rare opportunity to do justice, without any bias in mind".
"I am humbled by the honour", he told members and said the play of numbers was now a thing of the past for him.
"But I want to also salute people who were millionaires and landowners, people like Motilal Nehru who was a renowned advocate then. It is very inspiring both for the people of your party and the opposition, who work with utmost dedication", he said. Opposition leaders suggested that he should follow the practice of not allowing passage of Bills in the din and give more time to them. I hope that there wouldn't be scope for such a situation.
"There is a tradition of this House that no bill is passed in din. But at the same time, the minorities have also their responsibilities", he said, quoting former president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan during his farewell speech at the Rajya Sabha. He urged the media to "focus more on constructive debates" than "sensationalism, negativism, controversies and dramatics". Several leaders spoke about the former minister's penchant for limericks and acronyms. Derek O'Brien of the TMC in Venkaiah's style described the chairman using an acronym Naidu as Now All India's Dearest Umpire. Having spent 20 years in the House, Naidu had the required understanding and experience. He is running the proceedings of the House today as its new Chairman. "Behind you, there are the (mark of) weighing scales", he said Azad also said that all the members of RS are given the freedom to put forth their views. "He continues to write obituaries".
