Trump hits McConnell for Senate crash of Obama health law repeal
Early Friday morning, President Dumbass von Fuck Face continued to escalate tensions with North Korea by tweeting that the US was ready to pounce if the rogue nation continues to "act unwisely", CNN reports.
A New York Times article on Friday noted that Trump's supporters claim that a declaration of war against North Korea would be "legally justified as an act of self-defense". But he did take the opportunity to blame former administrations for the strained relationship with North Korea.
On Thursday night, the state-run Korean Central News Agency accused Seoul of detaining 13 North Korean women whom South Korean authorities said defected on their own, calling the detention a "hideous crime" and "another intolerable political provocation".
North Korea has dismissed his dire warnings as "nonsense".
But, given the South has dealt with the North's aggressions, tests and tough talk for almost seven decades since the Korean War, South Koreans have built up a sort of tolerance to its neighbor's wild rhetoric.
While the South Korean government has emphasized its close alliance with the United States and the need for increased defensive measures like the U.S. THAAD missile defense system, it has not engaged in threatening rhetoric. The White House also had no comment.
Any new military conflict with North Korea would likely escalate quickly to the use of nuclear weapons, bringing catastrophic casualties not seen since World War Two and an untold economic impact worldwide, former United States defense officials and experts say.
While the governor of Guam shrugged off the North's missile warning and said there was no heightened threat, the government has issued a preparedness fact sheet. "We still hope and believe that common sense will prevail".
The Chinese statement came after Trump also criticized Beijing, saying it could "do a lot more" to pressure Kim to end his country's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
The North Korea People's Army responded by announcing a detailed plan under consideration to launch an intermediate range missile over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean near the USA territory of Guam, where a major American military base is located. The US Pacific island territory is home to a strategically located US air base, a Navy installation, a Coast Guard group and roughly 6,000 US military personnel.
Trump said Tuesday in a televised statement from his New Jersey golf course that North Korean threats "will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen".
"We hope to strengthen the deterrent power of the Japan-U.S. alliance and response capabilities", he added, referring to the upcoming meeting of the allies' foreign and defense ministers in Washington on August 17.
United States financial markets took the rhetorical escalation in stride on Friday even as European and Asian markets weakened in a catch-up reaction to Thursday's drop.
Military officials will move ahead with planned drills between the USA and South Korea.
The situation is drawing the eyes of the world, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and German Chancellor Angela Merkel each discouraging the use of military force. The trajectory of the missiles would take them over Japan, which along with South Korea has vowed a strong reaction should the North go ahead with the plan. -South Korea drills begin.
If the situation worsens, Japan could be targeted by North Korea in retaliation.
Traffic, especially on lower-end group tours, has grown steadily to one of the world's most isolated states over the past few years, despite North Korea's persistent nuclear and missile tests, which have drawn ever-tightening United Nations sanctions.
In the Friday editorial, China urged both Pyongyang and Washington not to escalate the tensions between themselves, or create any more instability in the Korean Peninsula.
Libération was not the only newspaper to satirize Trump's comments.
"Maybe that statement wasn't tough enough", Trump said in the latest round of an escalating exchange of threats between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also said Wednesday in Washington that the State Department was "making every effort" toward a diplomatic solution to the Korean crisis. A war would be "catastrophic", he said.
