Wayde van Niekerk is still on track for a 200-400 double at the world championships.

The 110m hurdles saw McLeod, gold medalist in the Rio Olympics, clock 13.04 seconds to rank first ahead of Russia's defending champion Sergey Shubenkov, who was given green-light for the championships as an authorized neutral athlete by the IAAF.

Next for Wayde van Niekerk comes the "easy" part: Trying to win the 200 metres.

Bahamian Miller-Uibo, who famously dived over the line to pip Felix to Olympic gold a year ago, was clear with less than 20m left but as she exhausted, she tripped on her own foot, stumbling nearly to a standstill as her rivals stormed past.

Botswana's star run machine Isaac Makwala was denied entry to the London stadium which is hosting the World Athletics Championships after the runner was reportedly hit by the norovirus bug in his hotel.

"My first thought (after crossing the line) was 'am I first, second or third!' because when you run at your maximum, you only see straight - not left or right". Van Niekerk is 25, handsome and articulate, confident without being brash, with a great backstory about being coached by a 75-year-old great-grandmother.

"It's my dream and I make it", said Guliyev, 27, after taking a congratulatory phone call from the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The 400 final is on Tuesday.

Olympic champion Elaine Thompson was also physically sick before the 100 metres final on Sunday, though the Jamaican said that was not unusual for her and hadn't had any effect on her below-par performance as she finished fifth. "I don't think I got the respect I deserved after the 400m (winning the world gold) but it's only the beginning and I will show my dominance". "It is not that I was sick; there is something more to it. Usain Bolt is out now, so the IAAF wants someone to be the face of athletics".

Mitchell-Blake told BBC Sport: "I am glad to come through healthy".

He did show his champion's mentality in twice coming back to better Claye's marks and leave his 26-year-old rival to add another silver to his ever growing collection in his trophy cabinet.

Botswana's former 400m African champion, Isaac Makwala said he felt fine and was ready to compete in the 200m when he was surprisingly withdrawn from the race due to food poisoning. I even wish I could give him my medal to be honest but this is sports.

Johnson said the IAAF had "got it horribly wrong one way or the other", adding: "The elephant in the room is that Van Niekerk is an IAAF favourite".

"I can't lie, I'm disappointed to lose one gold tonight but the championships are not over yet so we keep going", Felix said.

In relentless rain, the Briton ran a controlled race and coasted home in second place to automatically qualify for the final behind Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia.

"If I was an overnight success, and this was my first gold medal, I could have accepted a statement like that".
