Provisional results from the election commission website put Kenyatta in front with 54.3% of votes counted to 44.8% for Odinga, a margin of 1.4 million ballots with 97% of polling stations reported.
"We demand the [electoral commission] declare the legitimate results and declare Odinga ... the legitimately elected president of Kenya", Mudavadi said.
All the observers spoke with Odinga and his National Super Alliance (NASA) party to formally express their grievances to the electoral commission and seek redress from the courts if they are not satisfied with the response they get. On Thursday, the electoral commission chief confirmed that there was an attempt to hack the system after the vote, but he said that attempt failed.
"The process is still underway".
Another security concern has been the al-Shabab extremist group, based in neighboring Somalia, which already has threatened Kenya's elections with a series of deadly attacks in border areas.
"If anything was electronically fiddled with, there is a way to go back and absolutely ascertain what happened in the polling station". That claim echoed one made by Odinga shortly after the voting.
The 2007 election led to horrific bloodshed.
The opposition's claim led to sporadic outbreaks of violence.
His deputy Kalonzo Musyoka also called for calm but said the opposition might call for unspecified "action" at a later date. Ethnic identities in Kenya are strong, and so, too, are rivalries between them, which can erupt into violence, especially over land and water use.
Demonstrator Sebastian Omolo, a supporter of Mr Odinga, said: 'He is not accepting the results and that is why we are on the streets but police have started shooting'. "You can only cheat a people for so long", he said.
Peaceful elections in East Africa's largest economy would help provide stability to the region. He called the election a fraud and stated that he could not control what the people would do.
Global observers from the African Union, Commonwealth and European Union largely praised a peaceful day of voting, while urging patience as results are finalised by the IEBC.
But Kenyan election officials say only they have the authority to declare the victor, and global election observers say they have seen no signs of interfering with the vote.
Nearly 19.6 million Kenyans went to vote in the presidential poll, resulting in large queues forming outside voting stations throughout the day.
"I wish to take this opportunity to confirm that our elections management system is secure".
"We have our projections from our agents which show we are ahead by far", he said.
He ran for president three times before this: In 2007 and again in 2013, he was the primary challenger.
