Fear of North Korea attack sends Wall Street spiraling
Euro Stoxx 50 index was down by 1.27 percent and CAC 40 lost 1.4 percent as investors turned cautious. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.
North Korea said it was completing plans to fire four intermediate-range missiles over Japan to land near the U.S. Pacific island territory of Guam in an unusually detailed threat.
Kim Ye-eun, an analyst at Cape Investment & Securities, said North Korea risks are to blame for the decline in the main index. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index plunged by 2%, while South Korea's Kospi Index slumped by 1.7%.
Possibly due to the lack of appetite for risk in the market, the euro suffered on Thursday, down slightly against the dollar by 0.09% at 1.1749, slipping towards a two week low. The S&P hasn't moved more than 0.5 percent in one day since July and has fallen more than 1 percent only twice this year.

CURRENCIES: The dollar fell to 109.96 yen from 110.48 yen late Tuesday.
The possibility of escalation is made even more acute by the lack of any means of official communication across the Demilitarized Zone, though there has been no easing of the barrage of inflammatory comments in the US and the North since new sanctions against North Korea were announced last week.
The damage inflicted on world stocks this week by the escalating war of words over North Korea topped $1-trillion on Friday, as investors again took cover in the yen, the Swiss franc, gold and government bonds. Stocks may remain pressured this afternoon, as market players remain hesitant to carry riskier assets ahead of the United States inflation data, scheduled for later today.
Elsewhere in commodities, the September crude contract was up 39 cents to US$49.56 per barrel, September natural gas advanced six cents at US$2.88 per mmBTU and the September copper contract declined two cents at US$2.93 a pound.
Meanwhile, the technology-driven Nasdaq Composite Index (NYSEARCA:QQQ) settled down 0.3% at 6,352.33.
The BATS UK 100 ended down 0.6% at 12,742.25, the BATS 250 closed down 0.4% at 18,064.11, and the BATS Small Companies ended flat at 12,242.37.
