In Toronto, Venus Williams was forced to draw on all of her vast experience before overcoming the 21-year-old Czech youngster Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 7-5 to reach the last 16 on Wednesday.
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal lost his round of 16 match in the Rogers Cup on Thursday to Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). The two left-handers battled for two hours and 46 minutes.
Rafael Nadal kicked off his summer hard-court campaign with a bang, dismissing talented Croatian Borna Coric 6-1, 6-2 to reach the third round in Montreal.
Lastly, Shapovalov is the youngest player since 11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg to reach the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup.
Shapovalov, ranked 143, opened his campaign against higher-ranked Brazilian Dutra Silva and it was not going the Canadian's way as he lost the first set.
Elsewhere, on Wednesday, France's Gael Monfils saved four match points before digging deep to defeat Japanese fifth seed Kei Nishikori in an attritional three-set duel.
Nadal broke back in the seventh game then held at 30 to level at 4-all.
The third game of the second set lasted 14 minutes with Shapovalov finally holding serve when Nadal's volley sailed into the net. Nadal went up 3-0, but Shapovalov used two aces to fight back and complete the upset victory over the 10-time French Open champion.
That unrattled Shapovalov, but only momentarily after breaking Nadal fortuitously to force a third and deciding set. Unexpectedly, Shapovalov rattled off five consecutive points to earn three match points out of nowhere.
Shapovalov played an aggressive game throughout and had 49 winners and 41 unforced errors. A double fault followed by a forehand error gave Nadal triple break point. "Fatigue from last week is not the reason as I'm not exhausted", he said.
"He has nothing to lose".
For the Spaniard, a return to No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings will have to wait. "If he loses playing a good match, was good for him. David can play a lot better, too", Federer said. If he wins, he's wonderful. "Just to play against him is a huge honour for me".
"I hope for him that he makes it, and if not I'm happy for Andy to get another week at No.1 because the run that he showed was tremendous - I have unbelievable respect for Andy".
