This eclipse and the upcoming total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21 are related in that they are both part of a single eclipse season. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature's most awe-inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. People have watched the live streaming video of tonight's lunar eclipse at YouTube video channel.

On Aug. 21, 2017 the Earth will cross the shadow of the moon creating a total Solar Eclipse.

The American Astronomical Society said earlier this week that it updated its safety advice "in response to alarming reports" of unsafe "eclipse viewers" popping up online.

The eclipse takes place August 21 between 10 and 10:15 a.m.

Maximum obscurity - about 93% - will occur at 11:39 a.m.

The path continues across the continent in a southeasterly arc where the show will end near Charleston, South Carolina at 4:09 p.m. EDT.

The Massena Public Library is participating in a NASA program to observe the first total solar eclipse that has been viewable in the contiguous United States in 38 years. Since St. Johns is not in the path of a total eclipse, there will not be a time to safely view the event without eye protection.

Those can be very simple or relatively sophisticated, Lattis said, but even a fancy one can be made in a few minutes with household materials. Special eclipse glasses can protect your eyes. This bright reflection is called sun glint. Parts of Western Europe saw the full moon rise at sunset with its western limb in Earth's shadow. In an interview with the Iowapublicradio, Bob Baer of Southern Illinois University, telescopes have been positioned for a coast-to-coast eclipse coverage.

To safely view the epic solar eclipse that will cut a dramatic shadow across the United States on August 21, you'll need a special pair of ultra-dark sunglasses. "I've seen a total eclipse before, and it's breathtakingly lovely". For example, cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other.

Our moon may be 400 times smaller than the Sun, but it is also 400 times closer to Earth.

Using a projection method to view the sun.

Lattis talked about how UW-Madison scientists were solar eclipse chasers, from the 1920s through the 1940s, for a UW-Madison News feature story.
