SHOCKING: Head of IT at Kenya's electoral commission murdered days to general elections

Kenyan election official found dead days before national vote

Kenyatta retweeted a statement by his Jubilee Party condemning the murder and adding "we don't want to speculate or cast aspersions which may compromise any ongoing investigation".

While Amnesty International's Kenya researcher Abdullahi Halakhe said the death so close to election day should be a red flag to Kenyan authorities.

Police found his body and took it to the mortuary on Saturday, officials said.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said residents in Roysambu informed them about the auto. The two-page statement does not explain the cause of death.

Chris Musando, an ICT manager with the IEBC, had gone missing on Friday. Many fear the elections on August 8 could be tampered with as well - and cause another devastating outburst of violence.

"Msando's killing comes as the electoral management body was due to audit its systems, a week away from the election day", Namwaya said.

The country's chief crime buster, Ndegwa Muhoro, on Monday said they were seized of the matter, and that they would do their best to bring the killers to book.

"We are demanding government provide security to all IEBC (electoral commission) staff".

Caro and Mr Chris Msando, had been friends for months, the sister said.

Details of the murder were still coming through as the country went into High Alert mode.

While 2013's polls were largely peaceful, Kenya remains traumatised by a disputed 2007 election, which Odinga claimed was rigged.

On Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the provision of security for all IEBC officials, presidential candidates and their running mates.

Mr. Odinga, 72, who is from the Luo tribe, has tried and failed several times to be elected president.

A decade ago, disputed elections led to the nation's worst electoral violence that saw more than 1 000 people killed.

The opposition called for outside experts to help ensure the credibility of the elections. He told VOA's Swahili Service that the killing may be an attempt to frighten the IEBC.

Msando had been in charge of doing a test run of the voting technology on Monday.

Jill Craig reported this story for VOA News.
