McCain Returning to the Senate Today

Senate Heads Toward a Health Care Vote as Soon as Tuesday
The senate deadlocked 50-50 on moving forward with the healthcare debate, forcing Vice President Mike Pence to cast the tie-breaking vote.
With President Donald Trump threatening electoral retribution for Republicans who don't toe the line, McCain urged senators to stand up for their own constitutional status.
Senate Republicans were adamant this week about passing a health care bill that would repeal all or parts of the Affordable Care Act and subsequently strip health care away from tens of millions people. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. If the motion had failed, the Republican leadership would have had little choice but to start talks with the Democrats about patching up the Obamacare insurance exchanges and, perhaps, making modest changes to Medicaid. They will vote late Tuesday or Wednesday on two amendments - the repeal of Obamacare with a two-year delay, which passed the chamber in 2015, and the GOP replacement plan.
And he let us all down. The vote itself was dramatic - protesters had to be removed from the chamber for chanting "Kill the bill" as lawmakers began to vote. Recently, several Republicans have said they won't back a straight repeal option like this and, as of now, it will likely fail.
Senate Republicans also could consider a shortened version of repeal, called a "skinny repeal", which would end the mandates in Obamacare on individuals and employers to obtain or provide health insurance, and a medical device tax, a senate aide and a lobbyist said. More than a half-dozen senators remained publicly undecided about the procedural motion as of Monday morning, and some expressed frustration that they were unsure exactly what steps would be taken if that vote succeeded. "I've seen it happen many times...those are the proudest moments of my career".
The Arizona Republican received a hero's welcome on Capitol Hill Tuesday, six days after announcing he has an aggressive form of brain cancer, when he arrived to cast a vote in support of starting debate on a Republican bill to amend the Affordable Care Act.
When I was a young man in Washington, Senator Ted Kennedy once told me to not judge anyone by their words. Judge them by how they vote. Heller has not fully supported Republicans on their plans to repeal Obamacare. McCain said of recent stalls on health care reform. Some Republicans were concerned that the House would simply pass the pared-down bill and send it to Trump.
Republican Sen. John McCain, only 10 days after undergoing surgery to remove an aggressive brain tumor, modeled the former Tuesday night in a blunt and biting talk to a Senate that has shown more than a few signs of being lifeless, contentious and otherwise hard. Also facing the end of his life from rapidly metastasizing cancer, he had been pushed out of the Obamacare political fight as the risk of infection from even appearing in public was too high.
Through history, McCain said, senators of different parties held contrasting views, yet they managed to work collaboratively. And yet, with that being said, McCain turned his back on America and voted party over the welfare of every American - sick, poor, disabled, or not. "I know Sen. [Mitch] McConnell worked hard".
McCain has been a regular visitor to the Arizona Daily Star over the years, meeting with news reporters and the Editorial Board to give updates when Congress was in recess and when he was running for re-election.
John McCain is not my enemy or an enemy of the Democratic Party or the people of the USA. He has participated in nearly every major bipartisan legislative effort in the Senate in recent years, such as the "Gang of Eight" immigration push in 2013.
One member of leadership also told the often-fractious group of House Republicans they were now "the most functional part of the US government".
John McCain's return to the Senate for the vote on Trumpcare had nearly everyone fooled.

GOP disunity painfully clear in Senate debate — AP Analysis
It's time we sat down together and came up with a piece of legislation that addresses this issue. "We are not celebrating". Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wanted to move on the measure Friday, but it was delayed after an objection from Sen.
The Most Disturbing Part About the Senate's Health Care Debate
Schumer, at a press conference last week, ticked off other ways to improve Obamacare "quickly and easily without partisan fights". Cruz has said that this change would lead to lower insurance rates for healthy people, and analysts suggest that it would do so.
Health Care Freedom Act
MARTIN: So let me ask you - one of the most unpopular provisions of Obamacare is the penalty for people who don't get insurance. While the Administration has reversed that decision for the 2016 tax year, it is unclear what will happen next tax season.
