"It is no longer in Charlie's best interests to pursue this course of treatment".

At an emotional hearing, in which lawyers as well as relatives were in tears, Charlie's mother was invited to give a statement before the court.

The Charlie's Fight campaign wrote: "Chris and Connie did everything they possibly could for little Charlie".

After test results on Friday showed that Charlie had deteriorated too significantly, he will now be taken off life support. "Our son is an absolute warrior, and we will miss him terribly". The hospital's preference is to remove the child from life-support since there are no treatment options available and to alleviate him of any further suffering.

He said lawyers had represented Charlie for free and suggested that they should have been entitled to legal aid.

Outside court, Charlie's Army campaigners reacted angrily and chanted, "shame on you judge" and "shame on GOSH".

3 March 2017: Mr Justice Francis starts to analyse the case at a hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in London.

"The parents' worst fears have been confirmed", he added.

However, Armstrong said that due to delay the "window of opportunity" to treat the child had been lost.

The court has made decisions about his care such as disconnecting Charlie's life support, despite the parents' refusal.

He said Charlie's case involved a decision about whether or not to continue extraordinary treatment, and should have been left to the parents. "Dark days lie ahead for these parents", he said.

The couple took the the case to the Court of Appeal and the UK's Supreme Court, where their application that he should be allowed to travel to the USA was dismissed.

As Connie took to the stand, she said: "This is the hardest thing we've ever had to do". Hirano believes there is at least a 10-percent chance that his treatment could improve Charlie's condition.

The pro-life organization March for Life, along with a coalition of other pro-life organizations, presented a petition to the hospital July 7, which urged the hospital to allow Gard's parents to take him elsewhere for treatment.

Perhaps the treatment offered by American doctors would have changed nothing for Charlie; its status as experimental therapy didn't necessarily promise a lot of hope, and Charlie's version mitochondrial depletion is as bleak a diagnosis as it gets.

They added that they too had received "hurtful comments" from the public surrounding the legal challenge.

3 May: Charlie's parents ask Court of Appeal judges to consider the case.

"In this country, children have rights independent of their parents", Judge Francis said.

"Staff have received abuse both in the street and online", she said.

Charlie, who was born on August 4 past year, inherited a rare genetic condition from his parents. He can not breathe without a ventilator.
